I'm alive. No good drugs. Whatever cocktail they used left me bloated and sore. It was pretty sucky.

Good news, no ulcers. Bad news, I have some sort of bacterial infection in my stomach. They took a biopsy and said they'd probably start me on an antibiotic this coming week. If that can help with some of the pain, I'll be thankful.

They also said I had esophageal something or other caused by the cirrhosis. Something about some enlarged veins in my esophagus that could potentially burst and bleed. I have the term written down somewhere(I think) but I don't have my paperwork with me atm. Think I left it upstairs. I turned in some kind of prescription for it that I'll pick up in the AM.

Right now, I'm tired, and a little addle brained. I've been trying to read some of the BB forum posts but the idiocy of many of them gave me a headache.

I'll try to post more when my head's a little clearer. Think I'm going back to bed now. Or at least going to try to. Gut still feels bloated and sore.

Thanks to everyone.

Where's Hobock? Bock, do you know what the esophogeal thing is and how serious it can be? The GI doc didn't cover it too much last night, most probably because I was still out of it just a bit and he seemed to think clearing up the infection took more priority atm. I'm assuming, based on past experience, you focus on the infection then move on to treating the other things. I had an infection years ago when I had to have my gall bladder removed and was told they couldn't remove it until the infection was taken care of. I'm trying to piece the conversation from last night back together, and it seems maybe he said the esophagus part had something to do with the cirrhosis interfering with blood flow in my liver. The other day, one of the things my gp talked about was something called "tips" surgery. Is that how they treat that? I'm happy for the no ulcer part and hope whateverantibiotics they give me work quick, but I'm still trying to look ahead at what might be down the road. The antibiotics will address the infection, but has nothing to do with the cirrhosis, so I'm just trying to get an idea of what more might be coming. I don't see the GI again for 4 weeks, which should hopefully give the meds time to get rid of the infection, then I assume we move back to what to do about my liver. Four weeks is a long wait. I was hoping you might know a little something to help me be prepared.

It sounds like the infection is what's causing most of the pain, and I'm certainly glad it's treatable, but they still haven't really determined what's causing the cirrhosis. From my understanding, it's not the stomach infection causing the cirrhosis, so I'm still left in the dark about what's been damaging my liver. Not knowing is pretty sucky.

Opiates are worse on your liver than alkyhol. Enjoy the Michael Jackson cocktail. Fentanyl and Propofol. Boon!

What about weed? Does this mean I have to give up my once a year smokefest too? I'm not habitual, but I normally meet up with a couple of friends once a year to enjoy a few good hits. I had to give up my annual beerfest in the mountains with friends already. It was this weekend. Giving up beer won't be too hard for me, but I will miss the tradition. And of course my annual mecca to Vegas probably won't happen this year either, which really, really sucks.

For all I know, weed re-generates liver cells. Chief it up, bro!

Esophageal varices. It's very dangerous if it ruptures. They typically treat it with variceal ligation, which is where the tie a band around it, excise it, and either put in a shunt or cauterize it.

Psh, free? Sparty it's all you. Lulz

I don't even know what my position will pay, if I accept it. But assistant varsity/head JV coach has been offered. Considering that I haven't even applied for a job in district yet, I'm a bit confused as to what's been happening behind the scenes.

That does not sound fun. I started a med this morn that the pharmacist said might cause my blood pressure to drop some.(high blood pressure isn't something I generally struggle with) I assume that's probably a temporary precaution until they can deal with the infection?
