What's the difference between a member of the special forces and an army ranger?

Used to be, Special Forces were more of a long term, in country training type missions. Rangers were the move it, hit it and get the hell out types. Special missions requiring heavy firepower and strategic planning.

SF training is much much longer. Shoot me a PM and I'll tell ya all about it...

I'm not going to say which is more prestigious, but what do you think if you had to guess?

Haha, I was seeing if I'd get an impartial answer.

My hands are a little tied on the PM deal. You okay with sending me an email? I'd really like to learn. It's probably too late to do it, but I've always had that itch. It's always been in the back of my mind.

Can you explain what you mean by in country training type missions? Sort of like what we did in South America?

Getting with the locals and teaching them how what they need to know to take care of their own business. 7th will be a much better knowledge fount for this as my information is from 40+ years ago.

I'm one year away from having two degrees. It just seems like all of that schooling, and all of the money my parents put into it, would be wasted if I decided to pursue something like that.

I'd enjoy it, the physical and mental challenges. I just don't know if I have demeanor for it anymore. That part of me is still down there somewhere, but I've discovered new things too.

That makes sense. 7th, if that's the case and I understood you correctly, why does special forces require more training? How are people from Special Forces and Rangers chosen for SOC or whatever?

It's not a lifelong commitment. I'm no recruiter and i'm not trying to convince anyone to join, BUT if you are going to join and stay in the military. SOF is the way to go. Ranger of SF are both better than being in the regular army. Either way, you've gotta want it. You'll find out early on if something you want to do.

It's a challenge alright. What are your thoughts on the possibility of getting killed?

I really don't want this interpreted as acting like a badass and I fully admit that if confronted with situations like you would see as a soldier my answer could very well change, but....

It doesn't really bother me. At least not to the degree I think other people fear it. I'm not saying I have nothing to live for, because I have a lot going for me, but I don't really have someone that relies on me. No wife and kids, which seems to make it easier to me. With what I believe, I'm not really looking forward to death(like a christian would), or fear death (like a sinner would). I would love to live life and live it to the fullest, but if it happened, it's just over. Nothing more, nothing less. That's the way I see it right now. And this may not make a bit of sense to anyone else.

If I was going to do it, that's exactly what I'd do. I want the challenge. I want to prove myself and prove to myself that I am capable. I know I have the will to do it.
