I have a really cool pic from the UGA game, thanks for reminding me.

I don't have a digital camera. If I took my parents' I would be scared of loosing and they are awful about uploading pics. They can't even find the cord to do it.

Get a cheap one off EBay. I bought a point and shoot from there that is 6.1 mega pixels for $20 including shipping. I keep it in the car for quick pics.

Maybe not a bad idea. I'm blowing through the cash right now, but it's definitely something I'll set money aside for. I talked to my mom about it, and we picked out a good one, but lack of use and responsibility has me hesitant.

Just did. Wow. Didn't know that had happened.

I usually don't get bothered by any of that stuff, but just the way it happened and who it happened to kinda shocked me.

He was trailing the pack, they were in his in car cam as the crash happened.

If you've ever seen his interviews he's about the most likable guy you'd see.

The one I got was a Kodak Easyshare C653. It's great for quick pics. Some of the pics I've taken with it are close in quality to my more expensive Nikon.

I quickly read a few things about him and I think many would agree with your assessment of him. It's a freak occurrence that no one ever expects.

Well, what I wanted to talk about is his injuries. His cockpit landed against that fence. In the press conference the president or whoever said that he died from unsurvivable injuries. The way he said it makes you imagine the worst. So, do you think it would ever be possible to put a protective covering over that cockpit? Would there be a fume problem?

No way to tell without knowing exactly what the unsurvivable injuries were.

Well it seems like he was nearly decapitated, at the least a broken neck.

I think a protective shell would have helped. The drivers are susceptible to injury from flying car parts or freak accidents like in his case. I just don't know how practical it is.

Yeah, a lot depends on the autopsy. It's one of the dangers of open cockpit racing.

Formula 1 has looked at a closed cockpit and they may use it in the future. Some of the issues with it would likely be heat I think that the tightness of the space, adequate cooling is necessarily.

If you look at the last 20 years of open-wheel racing a number of the bad injuries and deaths are related to head trauma which would have not happened in a closed cockpit.

Yeah, I don't follow it closely so I didn't know it was under consideration. Do you think because of how bad this accident was they will look into it more seriously?

Well, if he was nearly decapitated and the telling injury was of the neck, fumes wouldn't matter at this point. I don't follow racing so I don't know what the specs are for safety concerning the driver. Obviously, not enough when this happens. But, knowing knee jerk reactions from people, the first thing they'll look at is slowing the cars down.

Well, what I meant was, if you do put in a protective shell over the cockpit, would there be a fume problem? They are obviously protected from that right now because they are so subjected to the environment.

I don't think slowing them down would make that much of a difference in a case like this. The cars just used each other as launch points. It all was caused by some tires rubbing and the cars broke to pieces.

As Nerd said, you'd have the heat to contend with if you had a canopy/closed cockpit. Then, you'd have to figure out what is the most efficient way to keep the driver cool without robbing HP from the car. But still, w/o knowing the fatal injury, it's all conjecture at this point.

Well Formula 1 and Indy cars are two different series. I say, that slydell is right, they will slow these cars down. 230 mph in a bull ring is too damn fast, there are no places on an oval to get slowed down in an accident before you hit something very solid.

I think there is a chance they do consider the whole closed cockpit thing in Indy, but it will be under a lot of criticism. In F1, I have no idea.

I personally want them to do it. Keeping the drivers exposed is silly and not really needed. So many deaths could have been prevented if they were covered up.

I totally agree with that.

Surely they will find a way around whatever problems would arise in putting a shell over them.

AC would be needed. LeMans cars all run AC, as seen on this Corvette (the part behind the mesh where the license plate would be).

Power loss would not be a big issue, if the series wanted to make up for power loss they could give the engine builders a bit more freedom. Give them a few extra cc's of engine size to play with.

As for the fumes, should be a non issue. Just about every open cockpit car has the motor located behind the driver, with exhausts exiting towards the rear. No real chance for fumes.

The biggest issue would be from purists. Short of exposed wheels, the open cockpit is one of the most unique features of these kind of racecars.
