Random, Thoughts, X,XXIV

The only bear I ever saw in person in Gatlinburg was one casually strolling in the black and decker outlet. Folks were equal parts freaking out and ignoring it. Bear was just cruising like he owned the place.

I was hiking in the Smokies with a pal, and we had gotten the last two bunks in a shelter when two guys showed up at dusk claiming to be through hikers on the AT. They claimed bunk rights, and as we were the last two to arrive before them, the consensus was that we were out.

Well, it was too dark to hike out, so we set up a tent a ways away from the shelter and fire pit. Yes, it was a time of year when tent camping wasn’t allowed in that area, but, as I posted, we weren’t going to try to hike out in the dark. We hung our food bag in a tree well away from everyone.

Sure enough, a black bear came snuffing around the shelter and fire pit in the wee hours, but didn’t bother us in our tent. I was sound asleep just before dawn when my pal who had gone out to pee started to crawl back into the tent. I awoke with a start and, thinking that he was the bear, started smacking him with my pack frame, shouting, “Get out! Get out!” He wasn’t happy about this, but we laughed about it later that morning.

A. Who knew this was a thing?
B. Who takes it so seriously that cheating is a thing?
I’ve heard of it, not the cheating part. Run by volunteers and made 15k pounds for charity is pretty cool, but also shows how much winning is everything to some people.

If you are the first car at a red light and there's an 18 wheeler beside you, (also the first at the light) and said 18 wheeler gets through the intersection before you, you're doing it wrong.

Also, I love cruise control. But folks need to understand if your cruise is set .1 mph faster than the car you are trying to pass, you CAN mash the gas and go around them instead of taking 5 miles to actually pass them.

Coming to a near stop before getting into the turn lane is not how it works unless there are other cars preventing you from getting into the turn lane.

Your light turns red about 2.5 seconds before mine turns green so yes, you should expect me to be going while you are running the light and turning left. Flipping me the bird just means you are an entitled ******

The signs letting you know that the road is one lane ahead are posted at least a half mile before this happens. Waiting until you nearly knock over a barrier to try and force your way into the lane should get your licese revoked and your car impounded.

Probably shoulda put this in the other thread, but whatever. Consider it a ticked off PSA

Also, along with your #2 and 3 points, entering an interstate at 10mph or more below interstate speeds is super dangerous to everyone around you. There should be an option to the courts that suspend/restrict these drivers from traveling on interstates.

About a decade ago, I was traveling my usual route to my mother’s home on a Satilla River estuary. Near Dublin, Ga, a cop started to follow me in the right lane of US 441. I checked my speedometer, and I was doing 63 in what I thought was a 65mph zone. After a bit, the cop turned on his lights. He didn’t pass me, so I pulled over. The cop stopped behind me, approached my car, and after checking my license, registration, and insurance, asked me what I thought was the speed limit. I answered 65 and added that I was aware that it dropped to 55 about a mile ahead. He informed me that they’d moved the drop to 55 a few miles further out and suggested that I had missed the sign and that’s why I passed the slow moving truck before moving into the right lane. He then asked me how fast I was going when I passed the truck. I answered honestly that I didn’t know, I had seen that the left lane was clear, accelerated around the truck, and resumed my normal speed. He asked me where I was going, and I told him that I was headed to my mother’s home on the coast. I offered that I had driven the route many times over the years, as I tried to visit her at least four times a year. He chatted with me about my mother and her home on the coast, then wrote me a ticket for going 8 mph over the speed limit, telling me to look for the new speed limit change on my next trip.
