I'll try. 'Sup?

A few music questions.

First, in this video, what is on his left middle finger? And what does it do?

Second, at the 3:57 mark, could you explain how the voice box works? I think that is what it is called, no?

It's a bottle neck slide or playing slide guitar. There are a lot of different configurations and materials used. I have metal ones and porcelain ones. You basically use it to slide up and down the strings for the slide effect you hear. Delta blues players started it a hundred years ago. They used necks off broken bottles.

Voice box=Probably made famous first by Frampton in the 70's. You play a note, it routes through the digital box and you finally shape the not how you want it by how you form your mouth. You make no sounds with your mouth, the shape is all that's need to shape/form the note/sound.

Hmmm, thank you. Pretty cool stuff.

Probably not a good explanation on the voice box. Basically, you buy it, run it through your amp, hold your mouth over the straw to form the sound and it does all the rest. The slides are fairly cheap if you think about playing slide guitar. Between $5-$10 for most. Watch some Bonnie Raitt, Johnny Winter, Jimmy Page and Ed King of Lynyrd Skynyrd for different types of slide playing. Listen to Skynyrd's Curtis Lowe. Ed uses a metal slide on the solo and a glass slide on the intro and everywhere else.

i learned last night that bonnie raitt used a beer bottle to play slide guitar. jimmy fallon teaches me a lot.

That's what we used to use in bars sometimes. It's a technique in how you hold it and how you lightly touch the strings. I've used the plastic butane cig. lighters, too. Bonnie is one of the best slide players around.

if i ever find anyone that can change the broken string on my mandolin, i'm going on a world tour.

Allison might be looking for a playa!!

I played a mandolin for awhile. It made me think I could play a fiddle because they are tuned the same and the chords are the same. That was a big mistake on my part. A good friend's daughter ended up with a good fiddle for free. About a year later, she got the mandolin, too. They are fun to play.

i never learned how to play it. chris thile was the inspiration behind the idea of me getting one. i also want to learn how to play the banjo. i hate country music with the exception of dwight and george strait, but folk/bluegrass is my thang.

Banjo is a "forever learning" process. The fingerolls, chording etc. Is some of the hardest to learn imo

You're in the perfect place to be learning. One of the best flat pickers ever lives there-Steve Kaufman. Also, got the back porch jams up in Cosby where everyone is welcome to bring an instrument and pick and grin all night.
