We had a moma moose and baby come through our campsite in the Tetons. I kept my distance because that's a lot of meat on the hoof. Bison are usually calm but they can get startled and go from 0-35 mph in a heartbeat. I haven't come across any grizzlies yet and really don't want to.
That's cool...if I'm not hiking leconte then ill hit up cosby and big creek. Not as crowded as the trails entering the park at gatlinburg. Plus the camping is great there....

I must tell you I am quite jealous of your experience. I would have been so excited to see a grizz!! I get so happy whenever I see a black bear I just want to sit (from a safe distance) and watch it
/take pics for forever!
I would have been scared of a moose too...those things are crazy aggressive and big!

we stayed at...oh my gosh...it was the campground closest to Cherokee about 6 months ago and really enjoyed it. Can't remember the name. Didn't get to hike much bc I twisted my ankle the 2nd day there...they really should mark those fire pits with flags...

I am the same way....at the top of leconte I saw a momma black bear and her 2 cubs. Well, me being curious as heck, I decided to step off the trail to get a better shot with my camera. My rents weren't happy and yelled for me to get back on the trail. I tried to tell them I just wanted a better shot...

Oh so you're THAT guy? Haha no no it's easy to get caught up in the moment like that! Especially when you're in awe! I have yet to get "the shot" but I'm hoping that this fall it'll happen. I usually get up around 5 and hit the Loop for good shots and this time ill be prepared with my new camera!!!

Now, you know for sure that you and the family need to include Utah in your cross country trip. And, that's just what's up here. Lots of stuff down south of Salt Lake City. About a 100 miles or so south of SLC it starts to take on a Monument Valley sort of look. From North to South, about every kind of critter you'd want to see except shark. Antelope Island, about 10-12 miles away is the biggest nesting area anywhere for eagles during their migration.I. Hate. You. (In a loving way of course).
