Ok,if you insist.I'd like to hear it when you're ready. Cool.
Thanks, man. I really like first person stories like that. I've got a few I'll tell some day. Won't be soon. That trademark boa would've been easy to spot I'd say. I've been to see some people that weren't in the right venue, too. It just feels odd.Ok,if you insist. It was 1970, was just outta high school and there was a Kool Jazz Festival concert scheduled at the Mid South Coliseum in Memphis. Of course at the time the acts that would appear at such a concert didn't appeal to young white hippies. However, at this particular event I noticed one of my favorite artists and groups was scheduled to appear, that being Big Brother and the Holding Company (featuring Janis Joplin). My good buddy and me got some tickets and attended. After watching several soul bands and jazz ensembles we decided to migrate down to floor level in anticipation of catching Janis up close. A gospel group was on the stage playing when we made it to the floor and we knew the Holding Company was next. As we were waiting I heard a womans voice cheering loudly for the group on stage and casually looked over and beheld a woman in a pink jumpsuit with a pink boa around her neck shouting how great you guys are (directed at the gospel group on the stage). I realized it was Janis Joplin and was about 20 feet from her and the obvious handler that was at her side. I told my buddy, look over there and tell me who that is and his chin fell to his chest. As the gospel group left the stage she was cheering at the top of her lungs and trying to get their attention but they didn't see her, of course. When they didn't acknowledge her she got very aggravated and used some language towards them that wasn't very appreciative. Needless to say her favorite beverage of choice, Southern Comfort, had been consumed by that time and when the band came on stage it became obvious. The performance that night was magnificent but the acceptance by the audience that was attuned to other styles of music (if you know what I mean) was less than enthusiastic. As she left the stage she stated, "you can kiss my ass Memphis". Sadly, I agreed with her. But it was one of the greatest nights of my life.
I will say this about a mixed venue. I went to see Bob Dylan and Willie Nelson (together) some years back. Definitely 3 different crowds. One loved Willie/hated Bob. One loved Bob/weren't crazy about Willie and the third (my group) loved them both. It was definitely a strange night. Thanks, man. I really like first person stories like that. well, at first it sounded like a bug zapper thing, but then it sounded more like one of those lil clicker toys that had two balls on the triangle things attached to the handle n u flip them back n forth against each other, then i thought it might be a rattlesnake but i thought their rattles were faster than slower. but now it's stopped.

Go now before they're gone. Seriously. Joan Baez did a concert in an outdoor park about 6 miles from here last year. Front row seats. I've seen many and continue when I have the chance. That's so awesome you got to see Dylan. I haven't seen many "greats" I would love to travel back in time to catch some legendary concerts...dang thatd be amazing.
