THEY are assaulting my brain with their disturbing of my peace. If it was in the workplace OSHA would have them shut down quicker than they could shout "show me your ti%*". Besides, when I do it I won't be standing in the middle of the road with a warning placard and flashing light....it'll be just like a stray pebble from a dumptruck....which brings me to my next random opinion :lolabove:

Athletes get paid more than nurses, cops, firefighters, teachers, etc. for a simple reason. Tom Brady could go do their job tomorrow. They can't do his.

yeah but its not as important is it? i mean i could understand them getting paid a little bit more since they travel a lot and all , but the amount of money they make to play a game for a living is silly when you think that without the other people you mentioned (nurses, cops, firemen, teachers) are what make our lives livable. just my thoughts though...its an interesting discussion. I regret however, that if you disagree with me, I won't be calling you names and insulting your mother like most threads on here turn in to :)

going undefeated, winning the super bowl, winning the mvp = great.

-teaching a child how to read.
-saving a life from a burning building.
-giving life saving cpr while the victim is still on the stretcher.
-making a drug bust that will keep illegal and deadly drugs off the streets and out of the hands of influential teenagers.

= better than any athletic accomplishments imo.
I look at the bigger picture.

That's the mistake most people make. Sports are industry in this country. Look at the jobs created and the revenues derived therefrom. Nobody's paying Tom Brady to play catch in the backyard. He's paid because he's a marquee performer in a multibillion dollar business. Teachers, et al are infinitely less monetarily valuable because they are more easily replaced. That said, the value of a good teacher is immeasurable because you can't assign a dollar value to someone being a positive influence on the lives of scores of young people.

You miss the point. There's a good chance Tom Brady could do all of the things you listed. There's an even better chance my third grade teacher can't run the two minute drill in the Super Bowl.

yeah exactly. i mean, i have no problem with athletes making a pretty great amount of money...i just wish the more important professions could make more than they do right now or athletes maybe make a little bit less...millions upon millions of dollars to be an athlete just seems pointless to me when there are people getting shot at, running into burning buildings, etc... often for less than $40,000 a year

When 70,000 people pay $100 a ticket to watch a cop conduct an arrest, they'll be paid like athletes.

-give them a raise.

I agree that athletes should be payed handsomely for what they do. Maybe not quite as much, but they should be rewarded for their dedication. With that said, lets balence the floor a little better when talking in terms of public servants ie: the above mentioned professions. I think you and I see this issue the same way in many cases, but not all to a certain extent.

while it's not on a per ticket basis, Cops had been running strong on FOX since it debuted while I was on the Hill. I also think that in many ways the new exploding popularity of the UFC can be considered a modern day Roman coliseum sort of thing. Anyway, Hat is spot on, there are far too many people that underappreciate the impact of sports on this society. I, for one, would get far more work done if Tennessee did not field a football team.
