Well, for one, all those kids whose Dad is in jail because of the war on drugs are no longer in jail. Even if they don't live at home, that makes a huge difference in the lives of the young poor everywhere.

It will reduce violence. No more violent black market.

There are too many benefits to mention.

What percentage of folks do jail time for first offense drug possession?

If lil Ricky gets caught with a quarter ounce, how much time in jail is he going to do?

I do not see it as a race issue. Its a money thing, and black males admittedly get screwed a lot, but so do a lot of other people. IMO anyone that argues there is no racism in the modern world, is either lying, or very isolated. But what scares me is a certain demographic claiming monopoly on being marginalized.

Not really either, though there is truth to both statements, depending on how strict you are with semantics. It's more like the war on drugs disproportionately hits poor neighborhoods, but yes there is some element of racism in the way it's enforced.

And the creation of the laws themselves.

It's rather simple. You see, if a non-white individual breaks the law then the law is clearly racist. What's so hard to understand?

This is what is difficult for me to grasp. A law that is not written against one group (jim crow, pole tax, etc) which is applied to everyone isn't inherently racist. I can agree that enforcement could have racist motivations, though. But even then, drug users have a choice to consume. By the same token, couldn't we say that tax laws are racist against whites because most tax evaders are white? Traffic laws are racist against Asians? Hygiene laws biased against the French?

The problem with that is you wouldn't like that line of reasoning if you were the targeted group. What if America passed a law against something people in your neighborhood tend to do...say that church donations are outlawed...when people get busted for a second offense are you going to be talking about them choosing to break the law, or are you going to be chirping about personal liberty?

Almost everyone here concedes that racism is alive, i think. It also goes many more ways than white vs black. The debate usually centers around one's definition of racism and to what effect it has on people's lives.

I agree. How do you know gun owners aren't harming people right now? Why do we allow them the opportunity?

Each ticket was 50 bucks. I was taking money away from my family, in essence hurting them, by my choice.
