Quote from the coach

This is the biggest thing, I think Heupel is turning around the toxic/loser me culture that had cultivated across 5 coaching staffs (beginning at the end of Fulmer). I'll be happy with 8-4 this year, however it is achieved. I hope this weekend includes a W but I'm not going to freak out or think all is lost as a fan either way, especially if it's a close loss (which for all the bravado ITT would be to a higher ranked team on the road).

From all appearances, CJH is making the right moves. He is also giving himself more time by the manner in which he carries himself and treats his players and staff. I expect us to step on their neck tomorrow and not let up.

That also should tell people that we didn't show who we were last week. They didn't show they're hand for a reason, this week they show us what we got!
That and you can't get but so dialed in for Ball State, so you're not gonna be playing that hard for 60 minutes.

Being a great football coach is in Heupel's blood. He was raised around football, I believe his dad was a coach. He's a fighter and competitor. Not being originally recruited by Oklahoma, he fought to get that opportunity there.

He's a winner all the way through. He has a national title and nearly won the Heisman. He's the 1st "real" coach we've had in a while. He's an innovator.

What I like most is that he just seems like a grounded person, like an easy going neighbor who is easy to talk to. We're lucky to have him here.

I'm not saying that your statement is incorrect, but I don't put much stock into someone having potential because their dad was a coach and they were raised around football. Dooley's dad was a coach. Pruitt's dad was a coach. Forgive me if I'm numb to that logic.

But, I do agree with the rest of your statement. I think Heupel is a great coach--the best coach TN has had since Fulmer. And yes, I know, LK was probably better if you purely look at X's and O's, but when you consider everything--attitude, character, football IQ, etc--Heupel is the best we've had in a long, long time.

I hope he does great things here, but more importantly, I hope he sees Tennessee as an elite, destination job and stays here for longer than what has become the norm 3-5 year stint

People have higher expectations for this team in yr 2 than most any other coach could've created. People want to see if he meets their expectations for the year, but they completely forget that this staff is why they have these expectations in the first place.
Yep. Nobody thought we’d win 7 games in the regular season last year. I would’ve been happy with a bowl last year, but understood if we weren’t able to make one. When you look at the holes in the defense it’s crazy we did that. But I think heupels scheme was perfect for the position we were in. Play fast, catch teams off guard, and hope the defense can get a couple of stops. It’ll be interesting to see if he decides to change the scheme a bit once we get more depth

From what we can see as fans, it looks like Heupel is a very good leader. That matters. It always has but in this era of football it probably matters a lot more.
Interesting.
What's different about this era which makes good leadership matter more?

Just CRUSH them ! Last year, we let them off the hook! I was at the UCF -Pitt game in 2019 and after pitching the ball to his wide receiver, Kenny Pickett sprinted down to the end zone and caught the ball back from that same wide receiver, on a trick play called "The Pitt Special! " Pitt won 35-34 with seconds left in the game! Just CRUSH them!
You just happened to be at the UCF -Pitt game and your a vol fan?

NIL for one. Just another thing in the locker room that can create division.

The way the media works too. If you want to see how NOT to lead in this era... check out Kelly's post game comments. You have to be honest and somewhat transparent but you cannot throw assistants or players under the bus. The faux "buck stops here" routine of Pruitt doesn't work either... all while he's throwing players and coaches under the bus.

But the biggest thing is the portal. Players can walk if they're not led well or if they feel they were deceived. Teams with good cultures and leadership will have an advantage vs teams that don't.

Agree with the appears to be making the right moves.

Disagree with buying time....if/when he loses the piranhas will attack. We will see the same derogatory and mildly humorous things painted on the rock and the same.tweets poking at any physical shortcoming, real or perceived.

One thing that is consistent about a few folks in this fanbase, they are excellent at spreading their toxicity. And its been that way for decades...CJM was the first to name them. His description was very very accurate.

I think that will be the key to the game. Can ou ol give Hooker time, if so I think we win handily. If not we may lose.

Don't forget our running backs and TEs. The + OL had to step up against a very good Pitt front 4.

Refreshing.

Who else remembers:
We've got 34 freshmen who've never been on a plane, 47 players who've never been north of the Mason Dixon Line and zero players who've played in a pro stadium.
Except all the ones who started the bowl game last year, and Hooker who played at Miami, right?

Football coaching acumen is heriditary.

There are a few outliers where it's dormant, but it's usually the dominate gene when passed in XY chromosome pairings. It's always dormant in XX chromosome pairings. Some pseudo scientists insist it can be dominate in XX pairings, but I don't buy into that trans nonsense.
