Question Game

Are you equating the South losing as his fault? The Confederacy was doomed from the start since almost all industry was in the North. The South was not prepared for war, but prematurely attacked Ft Sumter. They should have tried to stockpile more supplies, but most importantly, built up more arsenals. It would also have made sense to see if Great Britain was going to offer more than lip service to their cause. None of this was in Lees' control. He did the most with the least. It is like Dan Marino never winning a Super Bowl, does that mean he was not a great QB?

The South was not prepared because the South lacked a strong central government. The supplies were available but mismanaged. The commisar in Richmond had almost a year's worth of supplies when Richmond was raided toward the end of the war. Just to name another silly factoid, uniform suppliers in North Carolina charged the Southern government twice the cost to make a uniform but the soldiers from North Carolina were given a discount on their uniforms.

Lee was a great commander, but one had to wonder why he fought every battle as if it were the last battle.

I think that was his major flaw, he wanted another Cannae because he believed that would be the only way the South could win. Even with a Cannae I believe the South still would have lost.

Lee should have patterned his strategy after George Washington, Lee's hero, and drug the war out and not risk the casualties.

But this is a discussion we can have in the pub.

I love talking about the Civil War.
