Would it be possible to argue that Lee was not a "great" military commander?

Are you equating the South losing as his fault? The Confederacy was doomed from the start since almost all industry was in the North. The South was not prepared for war, but prematurely attacked Ft Sumter. They should have tried to stockpile more supplies, but most importantly, built up more arsenals. It would also have made sense to see if Great Britain was going to offer more than lip service to their cause. None of this was in Lees' control. He did the most with the least. It is like Dan Marino never winning a Super Bowl, does that mean he was not a great QB?
