Lots of questions as we wake up 2-4 this morning. Wanted to lay a few things out and avoid the optimistic/pessimistic ditches and aim for realistic.
1) The defense should be better. In my opinion the reason it’s not is because of the defensive line. We have zero dynamic pass rushers (think Barnett) and zero interior monsters (think Hayensworth). They may be on the roster (Simmons, Thomas, Joseph, etc) but those guys had no offseason and are young.
The flip side is that many will argue that Arkansas is in the same boat with their team and yet they are winning. Granted. I think it’s a function of Briles more than their D.
2) Quarterback play dynamically alters teams. I totally disagree with anyone who thinks Chaney can’t coach. The guy was solid here before and even last year at times (Bama game) was really dialed in, in my opinion.
JG ain’t it. Maurer ain’t it. And not having an off-season really stunted Bailey. When you have a stud at the QB position your team simply looks different.
3) Need to move on from Friend. There’s way to much talent on the OL to play like they did against UGA.
4) Need a thumper at RB. We’ve got talent but we desperately need a big back, and it shows.
5) We HAVE to hang on to this recruiting class. Particularly at RB, LB and DL. It’s insanely important. I don’t know how you do it besides blaming COVID and lack of QB.
