'25 QB transfer prospects (Joey Aguilar)

We simply need a QB that can make quick decisions and the throws. Hooker was a master at this. Milton often made overthrows because of his arm and Nico couldn’t make decisions fast enough leading to sacks. I hope Aguilar can process quickly, but it may take him half the season to get there.

I think JH can help JA on the INTs. At App St. JA had his back to the defense alot on play action. In JHs offense, the QB rarely, if ever, turns back to the defense. Eyes are always gonna be looking down field. That should help a lot with seeing things develop quicker. He will be a lot more willing to run the football as well than the last 2 QBs we had. I'm not saying he's gonna lead us to the playoffs, but I don't automatically see a disaster like some do either. We shall see though.

Exactly. And have some touch on the ball. Let your receivers make plays.

I’m not sure how high Nico’s ceiling actually is, we just bought the 7 on 7 pajama hype!

We were led to believe he was a taller Bryce Young but Bryce never struggled like Nico.
Yep, you truly cannot judge what a recruit has between the ears. No matter how much talent, if they can't read a Defense, can't make quick decisions and improvise on the fly, they will never live up to their talent.

Orrrrrrr don’t waste your time with HS. They are gonna transfer anyways if they don’t play.

Don’t care about player retention, don’t care how other posters feel. Live or die by the portal, that’s college sports now.

Our coaches can adapt or we can find new ones. Simple.

Tony, KC, and now RB are all doing well in the portal….why not Heupel?

Last year’s haul was pretty dang good, but other than that, meh.
Stick with high school on the positions you develop well or can’t get in the portal cheap the rest address via portal.

You cannot ignore high school recruiting. Not that many good players come into the portal to rely on it entirely. Tennessee has actually did a good job of retaining solid contributors. We have hit on the vast majority we have went after in the portal. But I think this staff knows what it’s doing. They know more about what they have in terms of ability and who they are pursuing than folks on a message board. They still have a few years of the ncaa scholarship restrictions to navigate as well. We will be fine, folks panicking over spring portal players is silly. GBO

Young was cool under pressure; very level headed decision maker. Nico, not so much.
Nico relied on his gifts to make plays under pressure. Not sure where you get that from, but, I recall of all the things in the World he made some plays in some big moments. Now, did he **** the bed in some key situations? Yes. But he was also a RS Freshman.

Lets stop pretending that Nico wasnt talented. He made us some plays.

Now, we know he was NOT a leader, self absorbed, and couldnt handle conflict - hence the cowardly manner he handled things.

The emotional maturity is key for a QB who is the battle captain.

Talent was never in question but he was never good at reading the full field and making 3d option reads, especially outside the pocket

He bailed often and didn’t find open receivers late. Usually he tucked and ran

In conference play he made few big plays

To be great, a QB should have "physical talent" and "mental talent", Nico has extreme physical talent but not enough of the other.

I think Joey Aguilar will win the QB1 job and will play well for us this fall.

Based on the limited action we've seen I think GMac is way better. Once he gets the reps and learns the playbook fully I think he will be the starter...next year most likely
Definitely won the spring game. Which doesn't mean much, but Merk had a few reaaaaly bad reads.

Then again, whoever starts, just hit the lay ups at least...

The biggest plays Nico made under pressure was leaving the pocket too soon and running. Rarely did he make a great throw under duress or while scrambling.

If he saw ANY pressure at all, he was bailing out to run.

Im not saying he was overrated, but we all have to be honest with ourselves and say we expected more from him. I did.

I didn't expect perfection, but I did expect him to be able to make a throw to a wide open receiver or at least make a good decision with the ball.

When he ran out of bounds on the final play of the Arkansas game just like Milton did against OM, I lost a lot of faith in him. That was a game UT should have never lost.
