QB going forward

My main question is -hopefully Cooper returns, then we need a true center recruit.I do not know if there is one already on scolarship, but, learning from and practicing/playing with Coop would help the newcomer alot.I know you can trainanother position player to center, but, a guy who has ,in high school, already has a famialiarity of line calls would be far ahead of a new trainee.

Hopefully, Jake Merklinger signs in December and enrolls early so he go thru Spring practice. The competition will be between he and Nico but Nico has a huge head start. But those two are the only real SEC caliber QBs we’ll have on the team unless we pick up an emergency QB in the portal.

Moore came here knowing that he was coming to be a backup and I think he’s good with that. The same goes for Shuler. People worried about Heupel giving Moore the job are seriously under thinking.

Do you think CJH has a thing for Gaston Moore since he was an underdog QB himself? Think he'll keep the QB competition open? Could explain a lot with Nico playing this season.
Maybe Nico simply wasn’t as college ready as some of you assume?

Yes there needs to be a competition and it needs to be legitimate. Best man wins regardless.

There have been a lot of claims here that Heupel wasn’t playing his best QB meaning Nico. What if Moore is simply better at running the O? Would those same people clamor for him to “get a chance to show what he can do?

Far too many people are sleeping on Navy Shuler, son of Volunteer legend Heath Shuler, in this thread.
Navy is a good kid that loves football and is earning a good education at Tennessee but he does not factor in at QB. If he ever sees the field, it will not be meaningful playing time.

They won't get a high profile transfer. He'd sit behind Nico. High profile transfers don't transfer with the intent on being a backup. Best Heupel could do is find a transfer that fits what he does well and run with it. They do need a servicable #2 though, because you're always one play away from having him on the field. Joe was durable i'll give him that. He took some shots..

I think Merklinger will be the back up next year, and they'll have intentions on redshirting him. Merklinger would then be starter most likely as a red shirt sophomore. I know I'm getting a little far ahead...

Yeah...thats why I used the blue font which typically denotes sarcasm on this site.

It's Nicos job no matter what kind of lip service may get paid to a competition in the off season.

Maybe they bring in a transfer for insurance but they won't hamper Iamaleava next year.

If Moore or Shuler get appreciable playing time, things have gone significantly wrong for the season.

Will Rogers will transfer in to compete with Nico.

He doesn't really fit our system. We want a running QB

In limited reps Nico looks really good. He's accurate, runs well, makes quicker decisions and has a very quick release. He just needs to put some meat on his bones and gain some top shelf receivers. Also, that quick release, quick Hooker like cadence will take a lot of pressure off of our OL which will have 2-4 new starters next year.

I like Nico Suave however, did he in his short time on the field this campaign show me that he is unequivocally our next QB and Savior?? Heck No. Therefore, am hoping we have 2-3 viable QBs vying for the top job come Fall. If CJH can find them, bring' em on.
I was impressed with Nicos play against Vandy, quick decision and accurate throws so I sincerely disagree with you. I think we have a heck of a passing attack in 2024.

That would be a good plan...in today's era with the transfer portal I doubt you'll ever have more than two highly rated QBs at one time. Nico signed knowing he'd probably be a backup or redshirt his first year then have a shot at the starting job. Merklinger is doing the same, but it will be interesting if he can't beat out Nico to see if he transfers out. Because we'll try to sign another blue chip QB in 2025...

If you participate in Senior Day, does it remove your eligibility? We use it to indicate if a player like Cooper Mays is intent on returning, but a non-scholarship doing so is less conclusive.
I am just not sure why he would participate as a junior and then decide to come back. My guess is he is done playing and possibly looking at getting into coaching.

With Nico only playing in 4 games this year, we have him for 4 years or for when/if he leaves early. If we would have played more games this year then would only have him for 3 years max unless he took a red **** somewhere down the line.

Yeah anytime you take a red **** usually not a good sign
