QB Development

Good post. I see one going to Miss St and one to Ole Miss. Both have 3 years left, (Shrout, Maurer).

Hypothetical... God forgive me for even suggesting this... Can you imagine if one went to Kentucky and beat us?

Jesus get on your horse, it's time to bring us home.

The problem is JG probably looks amazing in practice. He can make all the throws (some inaccuracy) when not being pressured and JG knows nobody can hit him in practice. The problem is he is not a gamer and folds when pressured. Coaches don’t get that side of him much until the game when ā€œlive bulletsā€ are coming at him.

There is some reason, and I don't claim to know why, that these coaches are working so hard to control the narrative on the QB situation for now 3 years.
1) They play JG during the times when it doesn't make sense or seem to give us a good opportunity to be successful (when he's melting down or facing a D with strengths that outmatch his weaknesses), instead of giving a backup some game reps for experience.
2) They refuse to name a depth order, won't even designate a #2 at the position. It's reached absurdity.
3) They deflect the obvious JG discussions by - and this is WEIRD - using the defense that "we suck at our jobs". Well they don't say it that way, but they openly admit that 2nd and 3rd year QBs who THEY recruited AND were responsible for developing are so incapable at this point of taking the field, that the Bad Jarrett personality (when it emerges) is STILL better than any of the others. Wow never thought I'd see coaches throw themselves under the bus like that.
4) They won't answer specific questions about the position if the subject matter involves who is or will be playing.

I can't imagine how awkward it is for the backups to have coaches consistently (passive-aggressively) insult them in public and to work so hard without even having the decency to designate you a spot in the order.

Never seen anything like this. Wouldn't care, if it was working. But it obviously is not, and they are doubling down instead of trying something different.
I wouldn't read too much into their comments, not having spring practices, freshmen all over the field, everyone on here knew UGA was a L, and it happened, why the sudden surprise? UT played well in the 1st half, depth showed up in the 2nd. If I was UGA, I would be worried. Tennessee is getting better, that is why they are still in the Top 20. Some of you have some real delusions about this team. The only big issue I have, is QB, JG got punked by a 2 Star QB.....If I was Pruitt, and I am not a coach, it's time to get a QB of the future on the field.

Apparently there has been no QB development. JG is JG. The recruited guys can't best a bottom half of the SEC QB. Is Pruitt our Rex Ryan. Good defense, bad offense.
I agree with your idea that if the recruited guys can't beat out a lower half (I think lower quadrant) SEC QB, something's wrong

I agree with your post and think you’d have a valid point IF this wasn’t the same thing that happened last year as well. Pruitt publicly criticized JTS and BM. His only answer was ā€œJG gives us the best chance for successā€. And refused to align a depth chart under him until he was forced to make a change. That staff knew all along who #2 was and judging by play calling it seems pretty obvious to me that Cheney trusted #2 much more than the reports said he should. The man has a good point in year 2 of the same thing.

I think Pruitt is simply too risk averse on offense. We have a QB who has led the offense to more than 24pts against an SEC opponent just 1 time in his career. But hey, he does a pretty good job of taking care of the ball.

Play the kid who has the ability to put 40+ on the board. Sure, he may throw a few more interceptions, but you’re a defensive coach - you’ll get stops, we’ve already seen it. Field an offense that can spot you 35pts and then ride that defense to Ws!

I understand that HB has not practiced much. He is a freshman. Never played in a SEC game yet. Possible red shirt?
If he is the QB of the future, why not put him in the games now. He would get 7 games to learn for next year!
JG has not beat anyone in the SEC that we were not supposed to (maybe Auburn would count).
I guess JP has pressure to win now but we just got hammered by GA. Bama is Bama as usual. UF can score lot of points.
A&M appears tough. I hope JP is not a Dan Quinn (Falcons).
By the way, did we ever go to a 2 tight end set against GA?

would the fans accept a 3-7 season?

JG this year and next. Half a decade!

Hopefully the COVID crisis will run its course and we can have a normal spring. If Bailey is all he is supposed to be he will surpass JG or at least be as good as JG is in practice since JG plays his best in practice and that will get him some playing time. I don’t see the other two as every being any better than JG in terms of game performance.

There are technically no redshirts this year. It doesn’t count toward eligibility. You can play anyone you want, as much as you want.

My post from another thread about why Maurer or SHrout don't replace JG:
Thanks for re-sharing. Fans have already forgotten the transfer from Maryland Kasim Hill. He transferred out again.

Keep in mind Hill could have stayed without affecting his eligibility. But Hill saw what many did t want to see until the 4th quarter last Saturday. They aren’t playing anyone else. Your QB has just had a demoralizing 2nd half with multiple sacks, no offense and now a 3rd TO for a scoop and score.

The game is out of reach. Surely you save face, pull him and say ā€œwe’ll get em next week.ā€ You’ve seen it before, the backup QB comes in as a concession of defeat. The defense goes into their base scheme. Run the clock and let’s g home.

Nope, you trot him back out there. In turn, UGA didn’t let up and played until the final snap, which was another sack BTW.

As long as JG is on the field, your offense is going to produse in the range of about 14 to 21 points per game. It makes no difference if the defense is world class Georgia or vaporware Vandy.

I have to think about this. Good points.

My guess is that if you run HB out there, you are saying he is the QB of the future. Then you have BM and JTS possibly looking to transfer and the Salter kid opening his recruitment up in a year where it doesn't really count eligibility wise. I think they are looking to get the Salter kid in the fold have JG as the projected starter for next year and let the young QBs battle it out for the starting job.

"You'll find out my position on packing the Supreme Court after you elect me."
"You'll find out which of the 3 backup QBs is #2 when he runs on the field mid-game."

Yeah I see your point. Leadership skills are hard to find these days.

We haven't developed one in 3 years including JG. He's just our best option, which makes you wonder what they've been doing for 3 years at this point. He's obviously flawed to the point teams know to blitz the hell out of him and he'll wilt.

So do what? Lie to Shrout and Maurer and tell them that they have a legitimate shot when when in reality the QB "competition" has always been rigged, and watch them transfer in late summer of 2021 or during the season instead?

How's that going to look to any future QB who is thinking about coming to UT?
