If they were that good in practice, I think he would play them. I don't believe Pruitt is ever going to put the 2nd best option in as QB unless the best QB is injured. A lot of people (I catch myself doing it) overcomplicate what they see happening.
I understand that HB has not practiced much. He is a freshman. Never played in a SEC game yet. Possible red shirt?
If he is the QB of the future, why not put him in the games now. He would get 7 games to learn for next year!
JG has not beat anyone in the SEC that we were not supposed to (maybe Auburn would count).
I guess JP has pressure to win now but we just got hammered by GA. Bama is Bama as usual. UF can score lot of points.
A&M appears tough. I hope JP is not a Dan Quinn (Falcons).
By the way, did we ever go to a 2 tight end set against GA?
I don’t have a problem with JG starting even though your evaluation of his improvement is overstated. We do need to get the No. 2 Qb (?) plays or a series in the 1st half. If he has some success give additional series or rotate with JG. Let the man who has the better play in the 1st half start the 2nd half but both Qb’s can be rotated based on how things go. Yes a 2 Qb system. Someone will eventually show that he is better.I dont know about you guys, but JG has developed a ton since last year. Not perfect. Dumb interception, needs to hang onto the ball. Otherwise he has been way better. And its obvious.
I suspect Maurer and Shrout are better than last year.
People are overreacting to Georgia smacking us around. Thats not happening again. Nobody else on the schedule has anything close to what they have on D. JG will start and probably play well like he did in the Missouri game. If he's not on his butt he has shown this year he can find some open receivers.
If he starts turning the ball over and reverting to old JG against the Kentucky's of the world then we will see Maurer and Shrout for sure.
Right now, JG hasn't lost the job. Hes made better decisions with the ball than probably Maurer and Shrout could make as of right now. Thats why he's playing. With the younger guys, I think they know that they have a higher ceiling and could produce bigger plays, but their propensity to make bad decisions with the ball is keeping them on the bench.
So if we are playing Bama, does a solid game managing JG give us a better chance right now? Or do we risk it with Shrout or Maurer potentially throwing up a few too many prayers and getting it picked off. Also dont know if they are as comfortable with the offense as JG is.
Same thing with Kentucky. JG has beaten them before. He is the safer pick at this point. Assuming it was mostly UGA's crazy defense's fault for his turnovers, he can win us that game. Maybe the backups give Kentucky too many gifts.
Personally, I would have gone with Maurer and Shrout from the get go because I believe in both of them and we need somebody with some legit experience going into 2021.
I will start freaking out, if JG wets the bed against one of these shabby defenses and Pruitt keeps him in there. If he starts to really suck again and we don't see 18 or 12 out there I am going to be worried.

random stat of the day. JG is 5 td passes away from passing Tee Martin, Andy Kelly and Heath Shuler.
I mean he went from not having a prayer to being respectable. He has developed a lot.NopeNopeNopeNopeNope.
He still holds on to the ball... not just "too long" he holds the dang thing until he can SEE the play develop. At that point, he, and his receivers are playing a game of toss up with the D-backs. Everyone is on equal footing -- because he has stared down his #1 receiver.
He almost never reads through the entire progression, and it is even more rare to see him do it before his pass protection expires (He should be able to do it in under 3 seconds).
NopeNopeNopeNope. He may have improved on a thing or two, but he hasn't fixed the flaw that is fatal to his chances to be a great SEC quarterback.
Devil is in the details.
Tee was only starting QB in 98 and 99, and threw all but 1 of his 32 passing TDs in those two seasons. Andy Kelly didn't take over as starter until halfway through his sophomore season during the Alabama game. Heath Shuler only played 3 years, and didn't take over as starter until his sophomore year, and he threw all but 1 of his 36 TDs in his sophomore and junior years.
I mean he went from not having a prayer to being respectable. He has developed a lot.
Shrout had zero interceptions.I think it's pretty simple. JG does not throw a lot of interceptions. Maurer and Shrout threw a lot of interceptions last year in their limited amount of playing time. Had some of the DBs and Safeties had better hands, they would have had even more. CJP values ball security, and I imagine they have and will continue to work with JG on protecting the ball better in traffic this week.
Not exactly optimism, but its a reality. Last year at this time, JG could do absolutely nothing right. I mean the Missouri game he was solid. South Carolina, great decision making, some good throws, 3 or 4 bad overthrows. First half against Georgia was fairly impressive to me, especially with the throws to Palmer, with no protection and running game. Second half at Georgia, fell apart a bit. Bad turnovers. But as of this year, it has taken horrible offense line play against the countries best defense to get disastrous play out of him. I expect another solid performance out of him on Saturday. Don't think our offense can be explosive enough to beat the bammers. I think Maurer has the ability to guide an explosive offense. But I dont know if he can do that now.I like your optimism, and I wish I could jump on board with that, but being "respectable" some of the time.. which happens at unpredictable times.. and then disappears... doesn't feel like an improvement to me.
I feel like it is probably unfairly piling on... but as a starter, in 4 seasons, he has lost more games than Kelly, Shuler, and Tee's losses combined for all of their starts at UT.
Good post. I see one going to Miss St and one to Ole Miss. Both have 3 years left, (Shrout, Maurer). There is some reason, and I don't claim to know why, that these coaches are working so hard to control the narrative on the QB situation for now 3 years.
1) They play JG during the times when it doesn't make sense or seem to give us a good opportunity to be successful (when he's melting down or facing a D with strengths that outmatch his weaknesses), instead of giving a backup some game reps for experience.
2) They refuse to name a depth order, won't even designate a #2 at the position. It's reached absurdity.
3) They deflect the obvious JG discussions by - and this is WEIRD - using the defense that "we suck at our jobs". Well they don't say it that way, but they openly admit that 2nd and 3rd year QBs who THEY recruited AND were responsible for developing are so incapable at this point of taking the field, that the Bad Jarrett personality (when it emerges) is STILL better than any of the others. Wow never thought I'd see coaches throw themselves under the bus like that.
4) They won't answer specific questions about the position if the subject matter involves who is or will be playing.
I can't imagine how awkward it is for the backups to have coaches consistently (passive-aggressively) insult them in public and to work so hard without even having the decency to designate you a spot in the order.
Never seen anything like this. Wouldn't care, if it was working. But it obviously is not, and they are doubling down instead of trying something different.
