I'm curious, what's the story about jumping out of a hot air balloon and how does it work.
I've been a sports parachutist for many years, a "fun jumper," though I did participate in the first ever Georgia POPs record in 2003. [POPS - Parachutists Over Phorty]
To jump from a hot air balloon, parachutists ride to altitude in the hot air balloon's gondola. Once we reach safe altitude for exit (my minimum is 3500'), we scan for a suitable landing area, then jump out in sequence, freefall for a few seconds to achieve separation, deploy our parachutes, and fly to the landing area. When we climb out, we perch on the rim of the gondola or a small step if one is installed. To launch, we let go, belly to the earth, and push off with our feet into a tracking or stable freefall body position (Wind speed, direction, number of jumpers, and exit order influence this).
On that day, the balloon was rising from 4500' above ground level when we spotted a suitable landing area and began the exit sequence. I went first.
It was a blast! Fun jumpers collect exits from various aircraft in a similar fashion to climbers doing certain peaks, paddlers doing certain rivers, etc.
