Pruitt - Victim of his own arrogance?

I’m don’t think people will give him a reset if we barely win. I think the leash won’t be as tight but given what happened vs GSU, Pruitt’s “standing” is truly a week by week thing. If we come out and win big vs BYU, things will be better. If we can put two big blowout wins vs BYU/UTC, people will be cautiously optimistic going into UF week.

It all hinges on QB play for me.
Two blowout wins against BYU & UTC will have the very fans I was referencing predicting us into the playoffs.

I don’t see that at all. Maybe a crazy minority but my personal expectations were anywhere from 7-9 wins counting a bowl game.

With that said and after GSU loss, I’m at 6 wins and bowl result TBD. i think two blowout wins are needed to make that a reality but I don’t think that means we are gonna upset multiple teams....

I’ve said since last year we’d struggle to win 6 this year, and that if we did we should be thankful.

Many others predicted 9+ wins. It happens every year with a large segment. Hope springs eternal.

Much has been discussed of Pruitt getting roasted by the local and national media after laying an absolute egg in week 1. When you win, the coach can treat the media that covers the team anyway he wants with little repercussions. Pruitt has seen this from the HC at his previous "successful" stops. Because as we all know, winning cures all ills. What Pruitt is getting a lesson in right now is what happens when you are an arrogant blow-hard that brings a team out looking like trash in a season opener. Those media folks don't have to hold back on their assessment. The reporters have nothing to fear by calling the team and their performance exactly what it was. And that's exactly what is/was happening.

The bad news for Pruitt is this. He also has very few supporters outside the media. Again - no big deal if you're winning. But it's disastrous if you're a failure.

Here's my story. Late last summer I was in Knoxville watching kids play baseball at Lindsey Nelson. It just so happened that the football team was across the street running some station drills. Nothing special, 10 mins and blow a whistle and rotate. Optimism was still high with the Vol faithful because a new coach was in town bringing hope to a battered fanbase. Well, not long after the football team took the field, 2 college kids were running up and down the street and inside Lindsey Nelson telling kids and their parents that Coach Pruitt sent them to tell everyone that they were having a closed practice and no one could look at the field. I mean seriously. The job of these two goons was to run around telling people to look away - we couldn't gaze upon the sacred field on Pruitt's word.

My thought's on this ludicrous behavior? What a completely self-absorbed tool. I mean really. This guy is telling people to look away - not because they are scheming up some trick plays for the 3rd Saturday in October - this was a run-of-the-mill position station practice. What kind of person tells kids they can't look over at the practice field?

So much like how he's alienated the media - he's alienated the fans. Plenty of people have similar stories of this pompous coach. So when they played like trash on Saturday, my first thought was "what a loser" based on that day last summer. If he had any connection with the fan-base at all maybe I'd be willing to think "it's year two, give the guy a break".

Good luck Pruitt. You're gonna need it. But frankly, you're a victim of your own making.
Hahaha does he think he his Saban ? How bout getting to a bowl before you start casting demands on the fan base .

You can't see the field from the baseball stadium unless you get right up next to the fence to look under the black tarp.

I can understand not wanting people to do that.

It's also possible the huge tarp was actually coach's maternity windbreaker. I don't mind him telling the kids to cut it out, if that's the case.

Jones far surpasses Pruitt in the Marketing dept. There wasn’t much behind it, but he at least tried to engage the public.

It's so funny. I've always heard the old saying, where there's smoke there's fire. Story after story, from school after school but yet people poke fun and scoff at your story. It truly makes me realize Tennessee will be mired in Mediocrity as long as this mindset prevails. It's never the coach, it wasn't the coach with Dooley. It wasn't the coach when it was kiffin or Jones. When, when will it be the coach?

There's a small group of people who see it. Then there are the people en masse who have their head so far up their own butts they just refuse or can't see it.

Kinda similar to him sneaking in the back at a local restaurant to avoid any perceived fanfare. This was in feb of 2018. No one even knew who he was or cared. As bad a bootch was, he was never afraid to converse with fans or take pics.

One of the biggest issues with the UT fan base is that they expect a coach that makes them feel all warm and fuzzy. Stop being so easily offended and put your feelings away. Criticize the coach for not doing his job if you must, but remember his job isn’t to make you feel a certain way.

People only get their feelings hurt when the coach doesn't win.

If Pruitt won a national championship, he could say Tennessee was full of a bunch of inbred trailer park hillbillies and nobody would care. Look at Saban. If he didn't win like he did, that act would wear thin with Bammers in about 5 minutes.

I felt inclined to share a story about Pruitt. If you choose not to believe it, so be it. As a life-long Vol, after getting our tails spanked last weekend, I was completely indifferent towards Pruitt. The guy hasn't endeared himself to the fanbase or the media that cover his program. The guy is only 13 games into his HC career - typically I'd give him slack, but based on personal experience I see no reason to stand up for the guy.

The only other time (other than games) that I've had any crossing with Pruitt was at the Memphis big orange caravan stop last early spring. The guy just does not connect with the fans - which is fine when you win. Fulmer and Tee worked the room while we were eating. Then when they spoke Pruitt was like a statue - even embarrassed an old dude that asked about a recruit that the coaching staff couldn't comment on. Tee and Chaney were open and sharing stories.

This isn't a thread to bash Pruitt. Just to point out that his behavior and treatment of the people that should have his back - but don't - has resulted in him digging the hole that he's in now. Typically losing a game when your team was going to struggle to be .500 isn't a big deal. He just doesn't have any supporters at this point - and that's his own fault.

Pruitt is attached to Fulmer at the hip. Fulmer brought him in and when or if JP falls, Fulmer is falling with him.

We'll be better for it IYAM.

I told y'all when he showed up drunk in Richt's driveway. Why did smart pick Mel Tucker to replace him? Pruitt is a really good DC. He may be a really good HC. His personality is a problem. I remember when Thomas Brown had to be restrained from kicking his ass at practice. I don't think he will ever be able to deal with friends of the program. Hopefully he will be a good HC. I certainly don't wish him any harm.

Everyone is a victim of their own making, but Pruitt is up against the Curse and things are going south at an alarming rate now, stay tuned, Vol Fans

Could it be it's just he isn't that guy, a country gump, who grew up around football, taught, coached football, and moved up the ranks quickly where by the larger the venue, the less he fit the mold?

Mold being, an NCAA coach with a lot of media obligations and responsibility, and no matter how much he worked at it or tried to be more "approachable" or less bland and bumpkinish, he isn't that guy and although uncomfortable for him, he waffles in his effectiveness of being consistent?

Now, I would think that even in this scenario, he could and would be able to handle it.

Doesn't mean he doesn't have a bad day here or there personally where by it affects his demeanor in public.

I would hope your experience is the "bad day" and not the norm.

I haven't seen enough of him or put time into trying to know who he is. I hope he is the guy who will make our program relevant, and competitive, and keeps making young men into men who went to class and graduated and stayed out of trouble and played their hearts out and leave campus prepared and better than when they came in. If he can do this, I'll take a gump moron anti social mute if necessary, and he can even be a dick here and there.

I hope he isn't the guy you feel you met.

I liked your post for posting it. I do not agree with "supporters" or fault......I said when we hired him he has at least 3 years. By end of the third year we determine if he stays or goes. I'm sticking with that for now, will hold judgement until after the season and recruting in February, maybe I will feel different then, but, for now, he has a minimum stay through next year.
