Pruitt Postgame

Since when is "survive and advance" against a poor team acceptable???? I have heard so many excuses made for the team being unprepared....other teams were too and adjusted...other team we not...3 years unprepared for the opener....3 years of the same QB mistakes, 3 years of burned by slants....where the improvement...we got lucky....and int and a dumb luck punt return messup by SC won us.....no way we touch Auburn, uga, tamu, bama, or UF....but hey we are TN 5-5 is ok right guys..everyone gets a trophy
I guess you aren’t aware we literally didn’t have enough healthy bodies to scrimmage, or even hit in practice. LSU and oklahoma would like a W today.[/QUOTE]

That's a fair assessment by you.
No. I dont think i'm overthinking it.

I explained why.
We are seeing THE SAME mistakes that have plagued this team since before Pruitt.
- mediocre to bad QB play
- inconsistent run game (fed by loaded box from lack of passing game)
- busted coverage that happens anytime we play a team with similar athletes as ours

And its YEAR 3 and we faced a terrible team that had the same issues preparing because of 2020 being a sucky year, and we almost lost to them.

Did we not show signs of clearly being a better team early on? There were how many drives in the 1st half were we just left points on the field?

Everyone knows I'm all about Brian Maurer and his potential.
But if Pruitt isn't going to let him play...then at least play your 5 star QB you just got to campus!
So it's not just his words, okay. It's his actions that coincide with his rhetoric.
I think your assessment from his words from the beginning was an unfair statement. He clearly stated we played like he thought we would simply because we were undermanned for almost three weeks during camp. Of course we are not going to play to our standard that he expects. Our defense was missing two key guys last night in shamburger and Middleton. JG is who he is at this point. Would I like to see someone else start sure but Chaney can help him out more with trusting the run

This is honesty. But it's not a healthy one.

Here's why...
His perception is that his football team is at or near it's capacity with the given talent. It reeks of complacency in the developing production of his team dynamic...
This team is FAR more talented than 4 point victory over a South Carolina team that can't even win the Sun Belt Conference.

If there is not drastic change in this team's psychological approach, then UGA, BAMA, and UF will beat us by 30 points each...again.

This was more of the same from the past years. They won't win another game this season if they play this bad...

Kind of dramatic don't you think? Over the top?

In the midst of Covid 19 and other factors, we may never see the true team but then we may.

Call it an excuse and but Call on Texas A&M @ Home and Oklahoma?

Must be that complacency is rampant.

At this point, I don't think you can honestly evaluate any coaching staff knowing there were zero Spring Camps and a Ton of distractions in Fall Camps.

Here is my problem with your point of view. This year with Covid is so challenging with all the players being out. It is going to be hard to judge the progress this year.

I was at the game ... great seats, close to field. It was the first time I had been that close to see JG play in person. He lacks the arm talent, mental acuity, and vision to be a good SEC QB. His decision and delivery are very slow. He refuses to step into the pass and deliver over the top ... so the ball sails. That’s one example of the player playing up to their ability (not much ceiling). Not sure about who else CJP may be referring to. Surely Shrout, Maurer or Bailey can win the job soon.

"We haven't had any wide receivers practice for a long time"

I think this was a bigger factor than some would acknowledge. Watching Guarantano over the last few years has been maddening, but I think some issues last night were on the receivers. I'm not excusing the obvious overthrows that he seems to not be able to shake, but some plays seemed like the receiver wasn't in the right location. The deep ball to Keyton early in the game was even called out by the announcers that JG turned him around and threw to the wrong shoulder. If the ball was over the left shoulder, it would've probably been picked. It was thrown to the open space behind two defenders over the outside shoulder, but Keyton was turned to the inside with a defender in position to defend a pass to that side. The throw was where it needed to be. There was also a deep out to the right. I think Hyatt was the target, but he seemed to break the route off short. Those are timing issues that should correct as QBs and wrs get more reps in practice together. I've been critical of Guarantano in the past, and he was far from perfect last night, but I don't think he was as bad last night as some seem to largely due to a couple of receivers not being on the same page.

Every team doesn’t have the exact same # or the same positions affected. That’s why it’s a crapshoot the first 1-2 weeks.

I feel like CJP needs to bring up covid and players missing is just setting up excuses for bad play and losses....everyone is effected....was it covid the last 2 years that the teams wasnt ready to play game 1...is it covid throwing high, wide and behind wr....

I agree. He definitely missed a few he should have made but out of our 12 unsuccessful attempts only 4 or 5 were really piss poor throws. The miss down the sidelines early and missing Fant on a big conversion was the 2 I think hurt us the most. He made up for it though with those 2 strikes on the game winning drive.

Lose to Georgia St. at home to open the season, or get a conference road win with no spring camp and limited full participation practices ?!

As far as the QB goes, we now have our answer. We hoped JG would take a big step forward between his awful bowl game performance and this season, but we saw the same QB we've watched for a long time now. With one real exception: He actually ran in a forward direction on a play. That was refreshing. Wonder if it could happen twice in a game? Season?

This is the third offseason that he's worked privately with a "QB guru" and other SEC caliber players to develop. He's working, no one can doubt that IMO, but he's just hit his ceiling (a long time ago). So we know what we have there, and at this point we have to begin to question the other QBs on the roster. You can't beat him out? Seriously? With Chaney's tutelage and your own talents/work ethic?

I, for one, held out hope that Chaney could do for JG what he did for Crompton. He can't. It is what it is.
