Good for you....but lets not asses the fact that our coach was expecting us to play that way.I got the complete opposite out of that.
My take was -
"We were completely under prepared and nowhere near what I believe our capacity should be. But Holy Sh!t. Despite not being ready we pulled one out our arse & won..... With the limited practice we've had, I was afraid we might play really sloppy".
In a game of competition anything short of perfection is problematic if you pick at it enough.Good for you....but lets not asses the fact that our coach was expecting us to play that way.
You all really can't see the problem with his words...

In this instance; No, I really don't see the problem with his words. I don't think by admitting he expected our level of play that he accepts it moving forward.
I appreciate his candor in admitting that we weren't at and didn't play to our potential.
What's the alternative? A sanctimonious "I'm never gonna apologize for a win" like Butch did after the 2016 App St opener?
In 2018 he was willing to answer "I'll get 25 more players next year that are willing to play the game the right way" on his way to the locker room at half time.
I don't think he accepts any substandard preparation and I don't think he'd be as calm about it as he was if he thought it wasn't correctable.
You sure you're not reading too much into it?
This is honesty. But it's not a healthy one.
Here's why...
His perception is that his football team is at or near it's capacity with the given talent. It reeks of complacency in the developing production of his team dynamic...
This team is FAR more talented than 4 point victory over a South Carolina team that can't even win the Sun Belt Conference.
If there is not drastic change in this team's psychological approach, then UGA, BAMA, and UF will beat us by 30 points each...again.
This was more of the same from the past years. They won't win another game
Smh
This is a very important piece of info and him giving JG an out QB's and WR's need reps for timing.tjis didn't come out of nowhere either it's been mentioned a number of times the last few weeks that we didn't have the bodies, mostly because of covid protocols."We haven't had any wide receivers practice for a long time"
smhThat's a fair assessment by you.
No. I dont think i'm overthinking it.
I explained why.
We are seeing THE SAME mistakes that have plagued this team since before Pruitt.
- mediocre to bad QB play
- inconsistent run game (fed by loaded box from lack of passing game)
- busted coverage that happens anytime we play a team with similar athletes as ours
And its YEAR 3 and we faced a terrible team that had the same issues preparing because of 2020 being a sucky year, and we almost lost to them.
Did we not show signs of clearly being a better team early on? There were how many drives in the 1st half were we just left points on the field?
Everyone knows I'm all about Brian Maurer and his potential.
But if Pruitt isn't going to let him play...then at least play your 5 star QB you just got to campus!
So it's not just his words, okay. It's his actions that coincide with his rhetoric.

-QB play is unacceptable. I knew JG's 2nd throw of the game when he stared down too long and over threw a wide open receiver on the side line, it was gonna be the same old...I explained why.

Yes & too many.Did we not show signs of clearly being a better team early on? There were how many drives in the 1st half were we just left points on the field?
I'm not convinced Shrout has supplanted a healthy B. Maurer as 2nd string. After JG rushed for a TD did you see who met JG halfway, to jump in the air & celebrate on the sideline?Everyone knows I'm all about Brian Maurer and his potential.

Good post, my thoughts also. What you said is what CJP was referring to in his comments. GoVols! The first game (or two) is strictly “survive and advance.” How’d A&M do as a 30 point favorite? The virus protocols with contact tracing have destroyed whatever continuity we might have had. A few players didn’t make the trip. Did we even have any inter squad scrimmages? We had no spring practice, all while transitioning to a new S&C coach.
Yet we played several true freshman in an SEC game with no tuneup game. It’s the first time since 1988 we opened vs an SEC team. Yes, we failed on 3rd down on both sides, and JG still left points on the field. We didn’t get the ball back to the punter, but it didn’t cost us. SC had two monumental penalties, to zero for us. Despite the chippy play, Banks was the only player involved. It’s his first game in 12 months, he can be coached through this. Otherwise there were almost no penalties. There is a lot of good things i saw out there.

It's week 1. Relax. Enjoy this modified season. 2020 is basically an exhibition season.Since when is "survive and advance" against a poor team acceptable???? I have heard so many excuses made for the team being unprepared....other teams were too and adjusted...other team we not...3 years unprepared for the opener....3 years of the same QB mistakes, 3 years of burned by slants....where the improvement...we got lucky....and int and a dumb luck punt return messup by SC won us.....no way we touch Auburn, uga, tamu, bama, or UF....but hey we are TN 5-5 is ok right guys..everyone gets a trophy
I agree with you a bunch, I don't here. We don't win that game with '18 season type coaching or players. You also don't win 7 in a row with 4 of those coming away from home if you aren't improving. How many ints would BM have thrown last night? That's a fair assessment by you.
