Pruitt is a terrible hire and here is why

I totally disagree with this thread "Pruitt is a terrible hire and here is why". I hope it gives everyone who supports the Vols a reason to prove it wrong. Be glad when it is not on the opening page.

I’m in my 40s. I manage my feelings by beating up millennials.

Let's stop and face reality. Fulmer was totally misguided with his defensive stubbornness. The SEC has 6 teams ranked in the top 25 in scoring defense. So if we lucky we might join a group of 6 with great defenses. With all brand new inexperienced offensive people, where do we go? The only way to return to greatness would be with an offensive juggernaut which the SEC lacks. The SEC needs an Oklahoma and unfortunately Phil Fulmer left that train at the station because of grudges against the guy whose job he took and the guy who took his.

Dude your boy didnt get a big time job. You keep pushing the Kiffin narrative and it makes you look dumber and dumber. So many schools had a shot at Kiffin, yet none took him. 4 teams in the SEC west had openings, none took him. I mean the guy makes Saban shake in his boots right? Why wouldnt TAMU take him? With their recruiting base?

You need to face reality. Roght now your man crush is where he needs to be. In the minor leagues.

A formidable defense and an inexperienced offense will NEVAH make it in the SEC.

Except for the last two champs who started freshman at QB while shutting down the opposition

You do not win in the SEC having to score 35-40 points a game. Great defense is what wins in this league. For reference see our offensive output vs the defensive output in Dooleys last year.
BTW, you still washing fat Donnies car for him?

Evidently you missed my point, There are six teams in the SEC ranked nationally in scoring defense. Alabama is #1 at 11.5 ppg, Georgia is #4 at 13.2 ppg, Auburn is #10 at 17.3 ppg, LSU is #16 at 18.8 ppg, Mississippi State is #24 at 20.4 ppg, and South Carolina is #26 at 20.8 ppg.

#1 How long does it take us to become one of 6 elite defenses in the SEC that have been built over many years?
#2 How long does it take our offense to match theirs?
#3 5 years?

I find the following quote very interesting:

On the process of appointing his staff:
"We are going to take our time. We are going to choose the right guys who are the right fit. We're not going to talk about any names, but that is what we are going to do." The following day we have an offensive and defensive coordinator.

On your last sarcasm, the guy can coach and recruit. Last year he was an assistant coach on the NBA D-League Champion Toronto Raptors. This year he is a top scout for the Raptors. You havn't heard the last of the ridiculous charge against him to set up the clean slate for North Carolina,

OP, I'm gonna have to go with Phillip Fulmer and his experience and expertise over your opinion.

I think it will prove that Fulmer made a good hire. That being said, he doesn't have a lot of experience hiring coaches. In fact, he has absolutely no experience in hiring a coach at this level. Even as a head coach, he hired very few coaches in his 16 year tenure, which is one of my worries about him as AD. His coaching tree is less than impressive

He’s what you get when you’re down to the 20th choice or so. Doesn’t mean he won’t turn out fine, it just means he was on nobody’s radar when Butch was canned.

To think that you basically had Mike Leach, and someone torpedoed that to land Pruitt, is crazy.

Mike Leach would have had SEC opponents nervous as hell about playing UT on a yearly basis.

Mike would have been a cult like figure in K-town before the first game and in my opinion after his second season the entire Vol fandom would have been tickled SH.tless.

I do hope that CJP does as well as some here seem to think but I really do not see how they can be so certain. The best things I can find about him are he appears to be a fantastic recruiter and he took a UGA defense that was pretty sad and improved them each year he was there. By the time he left they were a consensus top5 defense.

So at minimum out defense should improve but I am personally underwhelmed by the offensive staff being put together.

I will say those who keep clamoring for 2 or 3 years for him to succeed are already carrying water for him. The very reason given for running FCBJ off was he couldn't coach up all the talent he brought in. The talent is in Knoxville and if this staff wins less than 7 games next season they should be ashamed and would be a miserable failure in my opinion. To me 9 wins are very attainable and 8 should be the minimum expectation. I realize teaching new schemes on both sides of the ball will make it difficult but good coaches with good talent should be successful

Ya know, I'm so tired of reading all the negativity about CJP! Previous AD's made those hires on instruction from one wealthy family controlling the athletic department. That influence is not as strong as it was, simply because of CPF being in charge of athletics now. I just read an article that told of how CJP had a list of coaches prepared for his staff when he interviewed. Experienced coaches, top quality at other stops, who are joining him here on Rockytop. I think this guy has a plan and the staff to put it in place, and he sure as heck ain't afraid to go after the best players. Let's quit being the negative Nancy's and give him a chance. And no, there was absolutely no sense in having an interim coach next season and blowing a recruiting cycle. That would be the hardest part for any coach to have to overcome.

Just like Butch had his infallible system. It's all a big orange curtain until the season starts.

Well it happened already and there's nothing anyone can do about it. If you're right, you can tell us all you told us so. We'll all be really proud of you. If you're wrong then at least you **** all over everyone's dreams. Go you!

Pruitt is more about game day decisions. UT can recruit itself. All a HC has to do is produce in the field thru a solid game plan and proper execution.

Saban is a good coach. He follow Neyland's maxims.

I don't know about his personality, but that maters too.

Inspire the players and coaches to out work the competition.

1. Pruitt is a phenomenal recruiter, one of the best in the country. Tennessee does not recruit itself...it has great things to sell, that need to be sold, by great recruiters/coaches.

2. Pruitt should definitely be a game day improvement over Sgt Carter, wouldn’t take much at all, nowhere to go but up. But his arrival is a lot more than just about game day decisions....it’s about a culture shift, a significant increase in toughness, a significant increase in the caliber of player recruited.

3. Saban isn’t a good coach....he’s by far the greatest college coach of our generation, perhaps the greatest college head coach ever. I love Coach Neyland, but Saban ain’t reading off his maxims to his teams, there’s no proof of that whatsoever. Perhaps he promotes/incorporates similar universal philosophies.

4. Our program/players and coaches have to do more than just outwork the competition. Botch Jones worked hard but his philosophies and methods were deeply flawed. JP has to completely change the culture and attitude of how our team approaches and plays the game of football.

Why is everyone responding to this thread? Some people just love to be miserable.

Isn’t it obvious? The thread/post is so patently absurd that posters feel the need to refute. I didn’t actually read what he wrote....thread title and author were enough for to know how ridiculous the post certainly was. I think a lot of/most fans feel good about this hire, are excited about this hire and thus the response.

Oregonvol's knowledge of football has been, like most of the rest of his current state of residence, is suspect. At best he should be ignored.

Many of us have been through two bad hires. I don't know how Pruitt will do here honestly. It could end up like Smart, or end up like Bill Battle.
