Pruitt can't say he wasn't warned...

It's just an infinite loop now...coach announced, sunshine pumpers and coach worshippers tell us we hit the jackpot and was the one we wanted all the time. Losses pile up, problems on and off the field mount, confidence is shaken, negavols pounce, worshippers and pumpers defend to the death, coach proves incompetence, firing, NegaVols say I told you so, worshippers and pumpers say they never liked that coach anyway. Repeat.

So, everyone on here is a coach worshipper or sunshine pumper or negavol. Except you. You're super smart and special and definitely way better than all the losers that surround you. Got it. Well in that case, please, condescend to your hearts content. You deserve it.

Here’s my take. There are two worlds:

1. The coaches, players, administrators (top donors too?) who are tied into the program. They are at practice, in meetings, or around enough to know what the right decisions are week in and week out.

2. The rest of us. Some think emotionally, others critically about what they see on the field, in news clips, social media etc. We all, I hope, want the program to be successful again. We don’t have good information other than the game so that’s what we focus on. Due to lack of actual insight we fill in the gaps with what we feel/observe then come here to vent or convince others that the sky is Orange because that’s what we feel.

Take this board with a grain of salt. None of us, or very few of us (not me) know much past what we get on Saturday. We know what we want. We know what we see on gameday. When those two things aren’t the same, well..... Volnation happens. It’s a game and these are kids. If what happens bothers you so intensely it ruins your day, week, life I’d find another hobby.

We are getting better talent at most positions and has improved each of the years he has been here. It takes time to build a team when the talent his first year did not have a single player drafted by the NFL.

Butch had one 1st round draft pick (Ju’wuan James) and two 6th round picks (Zach Fulton, Daniel McCullers) his first year, then none the next two. Pruitt had none his first year and two his second. I don’t see how that’s really that much of a difference to be honest.

Also; the SportsSource made a decent point today – comparing this year’s team to the 2015 team (both coaches third years), the 2015 team was superior in almost every position group compared to the 2020 team. Let me be clear, I’m not defending Butch. He was the architect of his own downfall. He wasn’t getting the job done and lost the fanbase and needed to be fired. I’m just really not seeing that much evidence that Pruitt has things going so much better at the same point in their coaching tenures. Maybe he’ll prove me and other doubters wrong later this season, or next, but I really don’t see where the optimism comes from that things are going to improve drastically, other than just blind hope.

Vol fans are no different than any other. We expect more from a coaching staff with these salaries and these facilities. We do not want to lose to a Georgia State.....EVER. We should not lose to Florida, Alabama and Georgia every year, year after year after year.

Until Mark Richt showed up, the only, time Georgia was considered our equal at all was when Herschel Walker was there. Before that it was about like South Carolina now. A game we should always win and usually did, but occasionally they would get us.s

Excerpt from a letter to Pruitt just after he was hired:

"...
However, I think you are coming into something you don't fully understand.
At first you will see great support here on Volnation. Our fanbase has a tendency to worship our coaches. Don't let this fool you, because it was the EXACT same way with our previous 2 coaches. This fanbase will turn on you, even the coach worshippers. It is a cycle. Coach announced...great support...not much progress...support lost. You can look back over Volnation for the past 2 hires and confirm this. This even happened with the Kiffin hire. These coach worshippers will act like they never liked your hire.
We have been rebuilding for a decade and most fans are sick of it...."
Did you pen to paper this? If no, then its not a letter. Also, how has Pruitt been warned? You expected him to read this? Just call me confused and ill move on.

I'm pretty sure that is the case at every school. New coach, hype and excitement follows. Said coach falls on his face and people start to turn on that said coach, sooner or later out the door they go. Same thing at any cooperate office. New head cheese in a department... you get the idea, that persone fails at there job and out the door they go, and everyone is looking for someone that can perform up to standards or better.

I do think there are people paid by the AD to try and influence opinions in fan forums. Just part of marketing these days.
Of course
And thats the ONLY reason for posting someones date of sign up and limiting thread starters before they can start.
Should be a time restriction not a post count

Help me understand your point, are fans not supposed to expect improvement at some point?
Ha! Not when you always shop the bargain bin for a head coach. Predictable hires, predictable outcomes.

Having said that this season isn’t over. There’s nothing anyone can do but let the season play out and see what happens.

The reason we keep getting dud coaches or coordinators to take the Head Coach job at Tennessee is that we are CHEAP. All 3 of the previous coaches had salaries that put them in the bottom of the SEC and nowhere near what top coaches are being offered to rebuild a program. Someone posted why didn't we get Jimbo Fisher like A&M did, well they paid him $75 Million and a 10yr contract. How about Florida, Mullen got a 6yr deal for over $6 million, $35 million, Clemson's Swinney is making $8.5/yr, Michigan Harbaugh over $7 million, and of course Saban over $11 million a year.

We hired our coordinator coach that had zero experience as a Head Coach, totally unproven for what base $275 plus supplemental comp of $3.5 million a year, so under $4 million. If you want to attract the top coaches in the country then you have to pay up and we just are not willing to do that, other than pay coordinators top money, but that is peanuts compared to paying for a Saban like coach. We spend all our money on buyouts for fired coaches is a fact.

It is what it is and it is going to be painful to watch but it looks like Pruitt is all we can afford, so make the best of it. If he does pan out and product a good team down the road, he will not stay and the big paying schools will snatch him up.

This isn't meant to be criticism, but from the outside, I would just observer that it takes patience to build a winner. The program is more or less where Kentucky is at this point- a middle-tier SEC team. Stop firing coaches and let your guy build the thing. It took Stoops 6 years to get to a 10-win season and a NYD bowl. I know, I know, Tennessee has higher expectations than a crap program like Kentucky, but let's be intellectually honest: it isn't 1998 anymore. The kids in college today have no understanding of who Peyton or Tee Martin were. They've only known Tennessee as a middle-pack team their entire lives.

It's a simple solution, but you have to recruit your way out of it- and then develop the players. That would be my primary knock on your staff. Great recruiters, but I'm not sure they're developing their guys. CJP surely realizes that it isn't like Bama, where you are 2-deep with 5 stars. Gotta develop talent for success.

With that said, a few signature wins would really turn the fanbase, though.

It’s a QB driven game. JG got Jones fired and is on the verge of getting JP fired.

Win and you are a hero, if you can’t win it’s time to move on.

It’s on JP for putting his trust in JG.

I can predict the future with the same accuracy as the next guy. Who knows? JG might get it together and start playing like a champ. If I was JP, HB would take every QB1 snap in every practice and game until further notice. A freshman mistake is unacceptable from a 5th or 6th year senior.
Agree. Put HB in. If he throws 3 INTs so be it. Kid has got learn SEC football. Maybe we will have hope for next year. This year is gone anyway and will get worse as long as JG is in.
