Excerpt from a letter to Pruitt just after he was hired:

"...
However, I think you are coming into something you don't fully understand.
At first you will see great support here on Volnation. Our fanbase has a tendency to worship our coaches. Don't let this fool you, because it was the EXACT same way with our previous 2 coaches. This fanbase will turn on you, even the coach worshippers. It is a cycle. Coach announced...great support...not much progress...support lost. You can look back over Volnation for the past 2 hires and confirm this. This even happened with the Kiffin hire. These coach worshippers will act like they never liked your hire.
We have been rebuilding for a decade and most fans are sick of it...."

Help me understand your point, are fans not supposed to expect improvement at some point?

Yep, it is always the fans’ fault. The fans have nothing to do with the inept coaching hires at UT. The problem at UT is they do not seek excellence in anything. Mediocrity is the norm and has been for decades. From a fan’s perspective it has become ho-hum. At least now we have great games on TV every Saturday from noon to after midnight.

It's just an infinite loop now...coach announced, sunshine pumpers and coach worshippers tell us we hit the jackpot and was the one we wanted all the time. Losses pile up, problems on and off the field mount, confidence is shaken, negavols pounce, worshippers and pumpers defend to the death, coach proves incompetence, firing, NegaVols say I told you so, worshippers and pumpers say they never liked that coach anyway. Repeat.

What dictates a "negavol"?
Is it someone with critical thought that doesn't follow the orange tinted sheep mentality???

Which is why I wish we'd stop with the crowning of each coach as "THE GUY" right after they are hired and mostly based on their first press conference. The endless threads of "No really guys.....THIS time we actually got it right!" No silly fantasies about how some big name school is going to steal our coach away before the guy even really accomplishes anything. No threads about how you talked with [insert fan of other school] said we got the right guy and we're scared to death of how you'll be in a few years.

But I know that's all in vain; whoever the next guy is we'll start this song and dance yet again, and a good chunk of the people who were yelling down anyone who didn't immediately buy into the coach being "THE GUY" will be the same people proclaiming they never liked him. Rinse and repeat.

It's a vicious cycle isn't it. The rubes up there are lucky anyone cares enough to bitch about it anymore..

You’ve got to stop giving fans obvious red flags then.

Can’t lose to Georgia State. Can’t do it.

Can’t have your worst loss ever as a ranked team to an unranked team. 27 point loss to Kentucky. The same school you’ve only lost twice to (by a field goal each) since 1984. Can’t do it.

A negavol is someone who says:

"hmm...this isn't going exactly like I wished"

rather than

"hmm...we are so fantastic just because we play in the SEC and at times could compete with football powerhouse schools".

Agreed 100%, but- how does it look when we fire another coach. No one wants to win more than me, not anybody. When we fire another one, we look bad

Vol fans are no different than any other. We expect more from a coaching staff with these salaries and these facilities. We do not want to lose to a Georgia State.....EVER. We should not lose to Florida, Alabama and Georgia every year, year after year after year.

That letter could have been written to any coach from any supporter of any university, particularly one that has a storied football program.

What will really make me mad is if Vandy finds a way to beat us. Obviously because it's Vandy, but even more because Vandy has a legit shot at going 0-10. And if they go 1-9 and their only win is us......oh boy.

Yep
I took a verbal beating for wondering why we hired a freaking coordinator.

Of course the same line of derense is still being used today..."Well whou would YOU have hired?"
Which is a bs excuse for any of the last 4 hires ( of which CBJ will likely prove to be the best of the lot)

If the Aggies can hire Jimbo and MSU can hire Leach..we could have hired a proven Power 5 HC.

But instead we dallied with a guy that almost certainly turned a blind eye to the horrors happening at Penn St and a Bama Boy who was estatic to get an offer for a HC apprenticeship from a place like UT.

Maybe Pruitt can learn and become a championship caliber coach.but history is not on his side

There are people that write letters to the players and coaches.

Let that sink in.
If you don't send a mixed tape, you're not even trying to get their attention.
I think I wrote him a letter too. Something about not sucking and he’d be fine.......I don’t think he got the memo.
