UPDATE
Here are two more teams that I found to be very interesting especially in terms of development:
2021 thru this week 2025
Currently ranked #2 Indiana 21-23 but current coach Tom Cignetti 2024-2025 record 21-2. Current 2025 roster: 5* 0, 4* 8, 3* 52, 2* 24. Louisville 40-22, 3rd year under Jeff Brohm, his 3 year record is 26-10. Current 2025 roster: 5*0, 4* 15, 3* 52 , 2* 2. Tennessee's current roster: 5* 4, 4* 44, 3* 29, 2* 1. I appreciate the roster rebuild and the stabilty CJH has brought, but next year I would like to see some signifcant development from his staff. Our defensive tackling is bad. I hope they can land at least two good secondary players in the portal. CJH is under contract til 2030, no sense in being irrational. We have talent, we need to get them up to par.

Citing Indiana and Louisville to compare them to us is ridiculous.

No it isn't. Indiana is ranked #2 in the Nation. my reply was to the OP and HIS comparison to many other ACC and BIG 10 schools, which both are members of, and their 4 year records as comapred to Tennessee. The praise for CJH is worthy for rebuilding of our program status and roster plus having us rannked. Me mentioning Indiana and Louisville is valid to the rest of the teams and confrences on the OP's list. I am simply giving legit accurate roster info and pointing out the great work that those two coaches have done in developing their players in a short amount of time. I am against any talk about getting rid of CJH. But to look at the CFB landscape and ignore D1 coaches who are over achieving with inferior rosters against superior D1 rosters is just stupid. By the way both are ranked higher than Tennessee in the AP poll and Playoff poll.

Neither of them play a schedule like Tennessee

It's amazing that people still don't get this..

It's a reason why programs like Boise St would win 10-13 games a season for a decade and have a terrible record vs actual P4 teams and people here would brag on their coaches.

Then those coaches would be hired at bigger programs and would all struggle and get fired.

There's a reason who you play matters as well

A number of posters are convinced Cignetti is a better coach than Heupel. I think he's probably a really good coach but he hasn't proven he's better than Heupel. The instant gratification, entitled crowd are so enamored by the flavor of the month

But some will tell you Heupel has had to deal with crippling sanctions from the Pruitt debacle. Gonna be a 7-8 year recovery process dontcha know.

It's the next shiny object...they said the same thing here about coaches like Sumlin, Freeze, Leach, Gundy, Fickell, Ferentz, Golesh, Grobe, Napier, Brohm, Petrino, Lebby, Kelly, and a bunch of other coaches who ended up being mediocre coaches

Good stuff. Is this ranking by number of wins or winning percentage or ????

Wins...just straight up record wins and losses

If you deep dive into the difficulty of schedules, it makes it even more impressive what CJH has done since he took over a flaming hot pile of mess
Ok, thanks. By winning percentage, Heupel's record is even higher on this list.

....I think..........

If you look at the schools in front of us almost all of them have 4* and 5* first AND second string. You would have to be a really bad coach to lose with their roster.

If you order those by win percentage rather than raw # wins, we rise above Clemson, Texas, and Penn State. Jump to #8 over that time period.

Thanks for this, Ricky. Good spot.

Go Vols!

It’s also noteworthy that Alabama is getting credit for three years under saban and Michigan is getting credit for three years under harbaugh. Heupel has a better win percentage than DeBoer at bama and Moore at Michigan.
