Press conference at UT tomorrow

Telling females to not be out alone at night is NOT the answer. Good Lord. Tennessee doesn't get it.

Please Butch, save this press conference.

That's interesting. Wrong, but interesting.

I used to tell my Marines not to go out alone at night. MARINES. Why? Because it's smart.

I really don't think this conference has helped. If anything I think it's making things worse. It feels completely like damage control and these coaches are acting like a bunch of "Bagdad Bobs" saying everything is great.

CBJ is getting pissed! I love that guy. I love my university. This is an awesome display of solidarity. The perception that TN doesn't care about the students is total BS! Society lets some disgruntled employees and a radical lying activist set the narrative. Disgusting.

This is why I am frustrated with the press conference. I truly believe Butch is doing all the right things. They had the opportunity to shine the spotlight on it and they choose not to. I'm just scratching my head on why.

Some of those descriptive phrases also apply to many posters on VolNation.

This applies anywhere, not just UT's campus. I promise you that there are people who specifically target universities to attack and prey on women, and I would bet my bottom dollar many of them aren't even students. You have to have some sort of situational awareness no matter where you are.

Exactly ... I live in Nashville and you here about the same on Vanderbilt's campus. Went to school at MTSU and it happened there as well. Their parking lots are littered with "safe" call boxes. We even had campus police offer rides to women walking to their cars alone at night. To say that its wrong for them to tell their players to be safer, not walk alone, etc, is crazy. This happens everywhere on college campuses

Of course they shouldn't!

You're not getting it.

Someone needs to stand up and say that they talk to the male athletes about respecting women, and no means no, and making good choices about drinking and hanging out in sketchy places.

The right choices should not ONLY be made by females or female athletes. Saying these things in relation to only female athletes is placing the blame on them when bad things happen. This is the very reason UT has a lawsuit pending.

You're only hearing what you want to. Exactly that has been said by coaches of male sports

Well certainly everyone has their own perception. If you have a different one that's fine. I respect your opinion. I can only comment on what I perceive.

And please for god's sake someone take Holly's microphone away from her! Good Lord it's painful to listen to her ramble and stutter!

LOL! I do agree about Holly.

There are 7 colleges/universities within a 20 mile radius of where I live, I worked for one of them for nearly10 years. On that campus, I know for a fact that the students are encouraged during orientation to not go anywhere alone at night just as a safety precaution. So for the media to suggest this is a singular issue with UT is silly. I never heard this much media speak about those other 2 universities.

ETSU is no different and it's not like Johnson City is some kind of hopping metropolis.

Many people here in this thread are saying that UT is not addressing the fact that they care about their students and are saying all the wrong things. But telling students to be safer in their everyday living IS addressing that they care about their students. If they didn't, they would probably just say "Hey, we have an extremely safe campus, sure go out at night, nothing will happen." Then the next time something DOES happen, the media will say " well why didn't you tell your students not to be out at night??" You can't make everyone happy and your damned if you do, damned if you don't.

What you're saying is true of course. Unfortunately we live in a "sound byte" world and all someone needs to see is a headline or tweet that says "Holly Admits UT Campus Isn't Safe For Women."

Everyone quit rushing the info in this press conference. The newspapers, tv, and blogs will let us know what it all meant soon enough.

UT can be dangerous, Knoxville can be dangerous, the world can be dangerous.
Serious question, is this helping UTK address the lawsuit?
I would say no.

For all those asking about Hart and Cheek:

Hart and Cheek are purposefully absent, which proves the University is a step ahead of the media imo.

By all accounts (including Brent's), Cheek will by fired by year end. With Cheek and Hart not present at the presser, the media is now focused their absence and the narrative is already shifting because of it. The media is now questioning the top of the house, versus targeting the Football program.

And before June 30th, the University will have addressed the problem at the top of the house by firing Jimmy Cheek. The media will praise Tennessee for this decision.

Incredibly savvy PR move by Tennessee here. Deserves a round of applause.

I'm pretty sure the legal team briefed them NOT to mention the lawsuit in the press conference. It is usually a good idea to avoid addressing things like that while under active investigation. They are doing a good job of not specifically addressing the lawsuit, but addressing the overall topic that instigated it.

They did tell them not to address the suit. But I would say that the legal team could've helped more by telling them that this isn't necessary. Why put the coaches out there in front of the media at all? I would think less would be more by UTK right now.
