Prepare to be underwhelmed again on OC Hire

I just wonder if Butch didn't get a bowl game in year 2 and went 7-6 in both years 3-4, how that would change people's perspective. Would negas be more happy with that?

I think the fact he went 9-4 in year 3 was a little ahead of schedule and raised people's expectations for this year. That is what we NEEDED to happen. We are back to being disappointed with a 9 win season. Butch has changed the culture, but to his own detriment unfortunately

Year 3 played better than year 4. Easier being the hunter than hunted. Worst thing was being picked to win the East. Back to year 3, that was a 10 win team easily. At least 3x, snatched victory away. Oklahoma, Florida, and especially Arkansas. Even could have closed against Bama. Year 3 was actually the magical year and it slipped away.

The talent from those two good classes are now moving on, cupboard needs replenished for staying power. Have to stack classes on top of each other.

Debord was underwhelming when he was hired yet his offense set school records. The system isn't a problem. With better oline coaching and play and the defense playing to even decent performance, this would've been a two loss team and both of those losses would've been to the eventual national champs. I would love a splash hire but if we promote Scott and hire Weinke I'm going to give it a chance.

Interesting article in today's Knoxville News Sentinel about how Larry Scott's brother thinks that CBJ would roll a 7 if he decides to hire Scott as the offensive coordinator.

I think the quarterback coach hire is more important at this point because UT needs an experienced coach who can mold Dormady, Jones and Guarantano while the defense and running attack shoulder a big part of the team at the start of next season.

I think this is a reasonable assessment. The QB coach hire is BIG and if we have a super practice QB player that wins the job don't be afraid to switch if he goes south. Bama did that this year and Hurst had a very good year as a Freshman moving forward.

If you dont think 3 srtraight bowl wins is something to be very proud of then there is something wrong with you.

not really. you can acknowledge the bowl wins for what they are relative to what we were prior, while also recognizing that in each of the last two years, a lot was left on the table, that was there for the taking.

Weinke has been the QB coach for the Rams since the start of 2015 to right now. That franchise's QB play has been underwhelming at best. Not impressed with his body of work.

eh. the rams weren't very good to begin with, and a lot of the issues can be boiled down to Jeff Fisher not always making the best of decisions....

his entire body of work, included working with QB's at all levels....he's widely respected as a qb coach. and his ties in FL and at IMG Academy don't hurt either.

i think the possibility of CW being on the staff is very intriguing.

Maybe. But in all honesty, only this year was there a true underachievement. We werent picked to win the East in 2015 like some may want to believe. I wouldnt say a lot was left on the table in 2015. There were some let downs but all in all, UT did better than most expected.

Now this year? You have a completely valid point. And also, 3 straight bowl wins is impressive. The last time we had that was when one of the best SEC coaches of all time were here. Anytime a team wins a bowl game, it means success. At least in my opinion.

OP: Truth
Hope it works out for Butch, because this is a pivotal year.
Scott and Canales, you could do worse, but i think the position certainly commands a higher tier of OC.

underwelm?...we had a National Champion team loose so bad ....we had to play a South Dakota or whatever corn bread mid-western state team in a hole game....jezz, I think UT pretty much laid down all year.

what serious coordinator wants to come to our freak show?

It seems that Butch will let go of the D and get the best he can, but he can't get out of his own way for the Offense. Guess we'll see how that works out.

Two pivotal years in a row. Nice.

This was a year for UT to break through. They didn't. Sure, there are reasons, but it is what it is. Next year Butch has to replace a ton. Transition in several new coaches. Everyone sees 8-4 as a dissapointnent this season, for one reason or another. 8-4 would be pretty darn good considering the schedule and what UT has to replace. No question recruiting has dropped off and player development is PIVOTAL for Butch to demonstrate he is the man for the job.

I can tell ya why the OC hasn't been announced. Contract. The UT admin does not want an OC in a multi year guaranteed contract. They do not want to pay Scott, who has never called plays, more than Debord, much less guarantee a multi year buy out. Butch is handing the keys to a guy who has never called plays. That is a gamble. And one that will be PIVOTAL.

Look at UT historically. They aren't a 10 win per year program. We are what we are. Keep standing reservations in Nashville. UT hasn't been seriously competitive since Dickey left. With this admin and staff, UT is nothing but a middle of the SEC type program. I don't expect championships anymore....in any sport. Just grab the special players and moments we do get and get a hobby. Hey, I've added to my retirement and dropped my handicap greatly since dropping my tn terrace seats a few years ago. Saturday afternoons are so much more relaxing and enjoyable. Go play 18, record the game, check the score over a beer in the clubhouse. We screw it up....hit delete and move on.

Many will blast me for being a lousy fan, but if UT is going to operate the way they are, don't expect much more from the fans. My family and I have had tickets since 1965. Eventually patience wears out. Can't keep serving ground beef and calling it filet for very long.

Not historically a "10 win" program? For the majority of college football history you really couldn't be because of the amount of games played Up until the 60's the Vols only played around 10 games a year (11 times they payed 11 or more from 1891 until 1965). Played 12 for the first time in 1950, and not again until 1970.

10 win seasons by decade
30's - 2
40's - 1
50's - 3
60's - 0
70's - 3
80's - 2
90's - 5
00's - 4
None since 2007.

In the 90's and 00's, Tennessee was a 10 win team nearly half the time.
