Prepare to be underwhelmed again on OC Hire

Hubbs just tweeted that Butch is interviewing candidates this weekend. Any got any info on that?

Someone brought some Hubbs notes to the Football
Talk thread in the recruiting forum. Sounding more and more like it's gonna be a CO-OC thing with Larry Scott and a QB coach. Sounded like Jones is set to interview Weinke, Canales, and a third unnamed candidate for the position.

I just wonder if Butch didn't get a bowl game in year 2 and went 7-6 in both years 3-4, how that would change people's perspective. Would negas be more happy with that?

I think the fact he went 9-4 in year 3 was a little ahead of schedule and raised people's expectations for this year. That is what we NEEDED to happen. We are back to being disappointed with a 9 win season. Butch has changed the culture, but to his own detriment unfortunately

I think most of our fans are just tired of mediocrity, and losing to USC and Vandy is just that. This fan base deserves a coach who can produce a competitive team. No one is sure this guy can do it.

When you look at the record of this program over the last 10 years and the fact that you are still putting 100,000 fannies in the seats, then the problem is not your fan base. Stop blaming the fans for setting expectations here. Lack of expectations will lead to apathy and that will kill a program.

yes, final tally is 9 wins....personally look at regular season number of 8-4. After 50 plus years, no, I am not satisfied with 4 losses every year....9-3/10-2 I can be somewhat fine with !

My money is on Canales if this is true. Big friend of Butch. The rest of the interview process will be for show. Then will announce that we did a nationwide search and came up with the best QB coach in the country.

Back to back 9 win seasons and barely missed out on both an SECCG and a Sugar Bowl? What a terrible year!
He didn't "barely miss" on the SECCG and frankly that kind of "moral victory" is the pathetic sign of a losing attitude.

Your 3 wins on the field statement is laughable too. You're essentially claiming you're upset because he hasn't had back to back 12 win seasons

"Upset"? No. Just looking objectively at what the man has produced. In '15 with a new coach at UF and the East ripe for the picking... he couldn't close the deal vs UF and then lost to a mediocre Ark team. He had a shot at an upset over Bama but as he has done at every opportunity except USCe in '14.... he couldn't get it done.

This year, there are absolutely no excuses for Vandy or USCe and TAM should have been a win as well.

If your kid who tries but struggles with math brings a 75% test home... you celebrate. If your kid capable of A's brings a 75% home... you discipline them. Jones had EVERY opportunity to win 11 games this year. He certainly had a GREAT opportunity to win 10. He failed.

Here are two names to consider. They both have QBs ranked high in their respective divisions as well as very high offensive performance.

Charlie Flohr- Northwest Missouri State University is the 2016 FootballScoop Division II Coordinator of the Year.

Phil Longo – Sam Houston State University is the 2016 FootballScoop FCS Coordinator of the Year.

PS- Shoop has been on the job one year. He did not develop nor recruit the D he coached. It is entirely reasonable to expect him to struggle early. He had no opportunity to build the depth and durability he needed. These problems are the 100% responsibility of Butch Jones.

If we go with Azzanni/Scott, I think it is Butch not wanting to be overshadowed or not even allowing the chance at hiring his eventual replacement if things went south. This is Tennessee, if you want to win you need to invest and we more than have the resources.

I would love to see and absolutely no reason we couldnt get Tyson Helton, Heckendorf or Yurcich.

GBO!!!

I'm not excusing those losses.

For the record, I think it is a good thing that we are back to being disappointed after a 9 win season. That should be the culture here. Butch has clearly brought that back.

Dave Hooker seems to have a good read on Jones.

I'd expect Azzani or Scott to get the coordinator title and Jones to bring his buddy from N Texas in from obscurity in Canales to help with the QB.

Find it asinine to think a guy like Dorsey is gonna leave a team that made the Super Bowl last season to come be a yes man for Jones.
If Canales is hired and is a good QB coach, promoting Scott or Azzani shouldn't necessarily be considered as a bad move. After all, it's Butch's offense and it was very productive this season.

I think it's safe to assume that Butch, Scott and Azzani all participated in offensive game planning meetings, etc. Scott and Azzani probably have a very good understanding of Butch's system and his game planning and situational play calling strategies.

If the offense ain't broke, there's no need to overhaul it or replace it. That doesn't mean you can't still improve it though.

If Butch wants some outside ideas, a fresh spin, then off-season consulting from outsiders is a good way to accomplish that. For example, Saban & Kiffin did it with Tom Herman.

Making some splash OC hire of someone who will want to run his own system typically means pretty major system changes such as differrent terminology, strategies, etc. and a substantial learning curve. That's risky and could result in a temporary lapse in offensive production.

It appears to me Butch is being pretty sensible.

I am to the point that I will be shocked if it isn't Canales.

It was a little absurd how much Jones was slobbering over him last year leading up to that N Texas game.

Being respectful to an opponent is one thing, but it sounded like was lobbying for him to get that job full time.

It's pretty simple. We make excuses for Butch every time he fails hoping he can get us an SEC East title and explain away 8-4, 7-5 regular seasons with losses to Vandy and South Carolina.

Meanwhile we see Florida with a new coach when the SEC East in his 1st and 2nd years.

I just don't see Butch ever getting it done. My Opinion

The OL is broke and you will see it without Dobbs as QB

That's what I'm afraid of too. Most likely scenario and would be so Tennessee. I just feel like we'd be getting a guy for that spot that's on the upswing in Weinke or Dorsey, whereas we'd be getting a guy on the downswing in Canales.
