Prepare to be underwhelmed again on OC Hire

Ken dorsey would be a awesome move has helped cam newton a ton in passing and if i remenber right larry coker used to let him run alot of his own play calls for miami id take him in a heart beat.

Colin Cowherd, who probably doesn't give a damn about Tennessee, described Tennessee as being a 'gold standard' job with a 'gym teacher' as a coach. Now, of course Colin Cowherd has no say on when Butch Jones will be fired, but you can be damn sure that if he's looking at our situation and realizing that Butch Jones' continued employment isn't making much sense, potential offensive coordinators are picking up on that as well.

You are operating under the assumption that the coaching community spend time reading Cowherd, Hooker, or any of the rest. Coaches might get along fairly well with broadcast journalists they have to work with on televised games, but the ones that write opinion pieces? I doubt most pay very much more attention to them.

It might have an effect on a few, but not to the degree you are seeing.

I don't GAF who the HC, OC, DC or any other coach is. You watch the team play, and go from there.

We'll judge 2017 for what it is and what happens on the field. Until then, I'll suffer until April, then watch the Cardinals as much as I can, and ride my Harley until they kick off next fall.

Works out when we get overwhelmed like with Shoop. I'd rather have the right guy.

I agree. What you or I or the other fans or especially the media thinks means very little. All we can do is see who gets hired and watch how the offense performs under the new OCs play calling. BTW, never liked Dave Hooker. He's another UT alumn who rarely has anything good to say about UT football. That goes all the way back to his early days on Sports Talk Radio here in K-Town during some of the Fulmer years. He has openly said he does not cheer for the Vols and isn't a fan. Feels like it would compromise his objectivity. Smh

I don't think Cowherd has any effect on them. Butch being in trouble has nothing to do with them. He's just not winning enough and his time is running out. You don't think potential coordinators are aware of that?

that's assuming he's actually seeking out big time coordinators, and it doesn't appear that's the case.

i think in the realm of hiring coaches though, Deboard didn't exactly suck out loud as most thought (self included), and he's hired shoop and scott since then.

the offense though is his baby, so it'll be interesting to see what approach he takes with this hire...will he do as he did last time with the OC and hire a buddy, or will he go get a shoop or scott?

i know where my money's leaning, but we'll see.

Scott paired with a good QB coach would be fine. My only questions are if Scott gets promoted, who will coach ST and will Azzani get mad and start looking for other jobs?

We can only HOPE Azzani finds a reason to bail.

If his job is not on the line in 2017 then someone in the AD is willing to let him sink the program back to the level it was at when he was hired. That is where it will go because it takes SUCCESS on the field to get the best recruits.... which is what you need to have success on the field... and especially when you have a bad habit of leaving wins on the field and perhaps a worse habit of almost never pulling off an upset win.

HOWEVER, UT will have a new AD by August. That AD will not be vested in Jones or owe him anything. In fact, Jones will be in a "prove it" position with that AD who may very well be itching to replace Jones with "his guy".

Jones needs 8 plus wins which means he must avoid losing any games he should win... plus beat at least one team that has a better roster. Based on his first 4 years, this is NOT likely.

The AD will be Gilbert, and Jones wont have anything to prove because the administration doesn't believe anything is wrong with UT Athletics

Helped Newton a ton? So before Dorsey came along Cam wasnt that good? Ok then.

No he didn't, Cowherd went to Eastern Washington. Hes from that area and if he hated all things UT why did he refer to it as a top 10 job? You're thinking of Clay Travis who went to Vanderbilt Law School after graduating from George Washington University. Clay Travis also loves UT and is one of the few sports analyst who doesn't let his love for his team keep him from discussing things objectively.

if a radio guy says something the whiners want to hear or if a writer writes something the whiners want to read then they're smart media members. LOL

If losing to USC and Vandy with the East and the Sugar Bowl on the line is whining, I'd like to know what the hell constitutes a problem, Reader!

Especially with a coach who has yet to prove he can deliver big time wins and is no where near Championship calibre on Saturdays.

Butch is a dead man walking in 2017. Who would jump on a sinking ship (to us mixed metaphors).

Sooo, do we go with what's behind door #1? 5 coaches in 11 yrs? That oozes success and gives opposing coaches recruiting the same players the ability to play the stability card.

We get better each year. I don't think that there is anything wrong with that. As a matter of fact it changes the o enough that other teams can't pin their ears back and come after us imo.

The last time we made an underwhelming hire we wound up with the 2nd best rushing offense the next year and near record setting point season the next year with more to spare.

The last time we where overwhelmed with a splash hire we wound up with a near record setting defense in most yards given up and made Vandy's QB look like Tom freaking Brady.

I may just like being underwhelmed.

These are two examples of why you have to wait and see how it turns out. A lot of variables come into play about hiring a coach that fans do not know about or even heard of. There is more to it than who is more popular at the time.
It may be a coach who bombs the season and team away or one who takes the team where all of us want to see them be.
Just gonna wait and see myself.

Then you will be really happy on Feb 1, 2017. :)
