Predictions for 2007

You know, Im gonna side with Volbeef for a change. Im not entirely sold on UF's offense either. Maybe having Tebow and running the "true" spread will change my mind, but looking at the Florida games I saw (which were a decent amount) I do think its kinda gimmicky. It seems that most teams ignore all the pre-snap motion as nonsense (this seems to be the trend in the nfl as well, ignoring lots of motion) and dont move to it. I mean think about it...they were benching their 4-year qb who was the #1 prospect coming out of high school for several plays EVERY game. Take away their two 5-star freshmen (Harvin and Tebow) and how many games do you think they lose?

They couldnt put away a crappy uga team in spite of five turnovers.
They lost to a team that did not score an offensive touchdown.
They beat the worst UT defense in years by a point.
They needed tons of miscues to beat Lsu.
They needed a fake punt (great call, though) and an absolute awful punt return by Ar-kansas to win the sec cg.

I just havent seen anything to be that impressed. I am entirely convinced that UF's offense scores more on talent then scheme.

And while Im at it, I dont think UF is #2. Worst kicker in the sec, no running back, most penalized team, squeked by lots of teams. Their season was made by their defense and capitalizing on other team's mistakes about as well as you possibly can. After Ohio State, Michigan was the best team I saw play.

Its enough to make me watch the Weather Channel at 9 p.m. on January 8.

What the heck...

Ohio State wins the NCG by 6 points, and remains undefeated through 2007 until losing to Michigan.

The Vols will have positive rushing yardage vs. Florida.

Erik Ainge will have an even better 2007 season than he did in 2006.

Darren McFadden will struggle behind a young and inexperienced offensive line.

The CBC Special - Michigan will be matched up with LSU for the NCG in January of 2008.

Point 1...you are exactly right...and the majority of that talent will be back next year fully engrossed in Meyer's offense. combine that scheme with that talent, and i think FL will be a contender next year.
point 2. again, i agree....when you are that bad in the FG kicking game and penalties, i think that even speaks more to the talent they have. they have enough talent to overcome their shortcomings...
point 3...exactly. why is it that only offense is what gets the accalades? their defense has been very good all year and has been the difference. why are they penalized for that? Playing defense and taking advantage of opportunities that defense provides has been a blueprint for many championship teams. and like i always say, mistakes, penalties, turnovers etc...are what separates winners from losers.

why i'm defending FL i don't know...but to do what they did this year is pretty impressive, regardless of how it got done, they got it done. winning close games is not a crime. Losing them is. Ask south carolina or us last year. finding a way to win close games consistently tells me more, in some cases anyway, about the quality of a team and their opposition than it does when a team just crushes everyone they play.

So, yeah, sure, florida can be beaten. they are not unbeatable, and they do have weaknesses...but their strengths this year have outweighed their weaknesses, and the net result is 12-1, SEC champs and playing for a national title.

would anyone here argue against that had it been us in the same position???? doubtful. we'd be thumping our chests, and rightfully so.

There is no way to crown LSU or UF already. LSU still has Les Miles on the sideline and that is good for at least 1 or 2 losses a season no matter how much talent he has (it is a ton of talent though). And, UF will be hurt by the defense they are losing (that defense is why they are in NT game) and Tebow will struggle as a true sophmore starter. Those could very well be the two teams that end up in the SECCG but at this point it is NOWHERE NEAR a given. If Meach comes back I guarantee you UT will be just as feared by other teams as either UF or LSU. LSU will most likely lose JaMarcus Russell to the draft, however their backups are studs so there should not be too much drop off.

never said it was a given, just that it was likely based on what i know today.

and at the very least, my "predicitons" are no more a given than yours about either team at this point....

simply, it's just speculation based on who's got what coming back etc....and how the schedules line up.

The thing is jake, we don't know who is coming back or not. There are always surprises when it comes to kids leaving early. It happens every year.

i agree...which is why i keep saying these things based solely on what i know TODAY.

i have in no way guaranteed the SEC title to FL or LSU...or that either are guaranteed to win their divisions.

simply, that based on what i know TODAY, that's what i think will happen.

there's always that "any given Saturday" or "that's why they play the games" mantra each year...and 07 is no different. A lot of things can happen. just imo, based on how the schedule lays out, who has who coming back, that i know of right now, etc...the two teams likely to play for the SEC title next year are FL and LSU.

i don't know how much clearer i can make it.:peace2:

Thats fair. In my opinion, based on what I know today (assuming Mecahem comes back). I think UT will have a better team than UF. I think our QB, WR, TE, and RB play will be better. They will have a better OL. I also think our offense will be harder to stop than theirs. I think our defense will be at about the same level as theirs. They lose a lot and we have a lot of young talent back at the LB position, two safeties that will be very good, and some talent but unproven DL. I think our special teams will be better. I would say our FG kicking would be an advantage for UF except that even losing Wilhoit wont make us worse than UF in that department. I would have to say that (even if Russell leaves) LSU will be a better team than UF. LSU will have some questions at WR and in the secondary but other than that they will be as good as UT and UF at every position other than WR. Only good news is that their coach is quite bad.

The funny thing is, if Meachem returns, the bigger key will be the 2nd-4th receivers taking heat off of him.

If he doesn't return, the key will be the 1-4th receivers. Those 2006 back-ups better be ready in 2007.

AZ....you do alright sometimes, grammar police or not.:p

still say 08 and 09 are the years we should expect really big things again.

Look for Brad Cottam to become the kind of resource the offense can look to to slide secondary attention away from Meach should he return, or help while younger WRs find their legs should Meach go...

Cottam's ready to assume a real place in this offense.

yep...i agree about Cottom...he's the thing that can make this offense go if utilized properly next year.

Cottom was pretty up and down this season. He had some bonehead plays and some awesome plays.

Chris Brown, IMHO, will be as important or more than Cottom.

maybe, but Chris Brown has shown marginal improvement...Cottam has the size adn speed supposedly to be a real contributor to the offense and not just another tackle.

i look for us to use the TE a lot like we did this year, in lieu of a full back, barring the assention of a really good one that is...and for them to be more involved in the passing game.

I agree with you on field goal kicking.

You MIGHT be right on QB, it is too early to tell.

The rest of that is just insane.

stating that UT will be better than florida aside, i do think we'll be better at the RB position than FL....and the qb is going to be hard to argue until next season plays out...sr qb coming back after a pretty darn good year....he'll be an advantage for us next season.

will it be enough to overcome the other shortcomings we may have? doubtful. but he'll give us a chance just like this year.

i truly think 07 will probaby be a lot like this year for us.

I was tempted to write that I agree with you on running back, except that it is painfully obvious to me that Meyer is going to spend about 80 percent of his recruiting time looking for the next McFadden.

That's the only missing ingredient for us right now and you have got to think that if there is some high school senior (or JUCO guy) ready to come in and play in his first year, Florida is going to be at the top of his list.

That and anyone out there that can kick a 30 yard field goal.
