I can feel it in the air. The smell of football season. Both sides seems to be progressing. I like the depth that we have and hope it continues. Thanks for the practice reports.

Breaking down the OLine v DLine reps of this footage (EDIT: whoever posted the video initially has since removed it from public view), to get an idea of how things are going in the trenches today.

Foreword: All these reps featured one side of the OLine (G & T) vs one side of the DLine (DT & DE) in a passing situation, and involved either an outside-in stunt (DE slips behind the DT to shoot the A gap) or an inside-out stunt (DT moves out behind the DE to get around the edge).

As you'll see watching them, the outcome was well-balanced, each side winning about half the reps.

-------------------------------------------------------------

--1st Rep --
63 Kendrick at LG, 77 Kerbyson at LT vs 1 McKenzie at DT, 40 Mixon at DE

Mixon stunts inside trying to hit the A gap, while McKenzie is initially double-teamed in the B gap. Kendrick quickly shifts with Mixon, leaving Kerbyson 1-on-1 with McKenzie. Kerbyson fixes KMac; meanwhile, Mixon has some success getting into the backfield, but Kendricks pushes him aside so he never quite touches the QB.

Win for the OLine, 1-0.

--2nd Rep--
50 Boulware at RG, 51 Richmond at RT vs 55 Picou at DT, 5 Phillips at DE

Hard to see through bodies, but it looks like Boulware flat stood Phillips up and pushed him out of the play, while Picou was stunting outside and ran right into Richmond. Developed way too slow on the defensive side.

Win for the OLine, 2-0.

--3rd Rep--
78 Mosley at LG, 74 Blair at LT vs 95 O'Brien at DT, 9 Barnett at DE

O'Brien lined up nose-to-nose with the OT, leaving Barnett out on the wing. Barnett stunted inside while O'Brien was pushing Blair 5+ yards deep (very quickly). Barnett ripped around Mosley lightning fast and tagged the QB.

Win for the DLine, 1-2.

--4th Rep--
50 Boulware at RG, 51 Richmond (?) at RT vs 90 Folger at DT, 42 Weatherd at DE

Folger did a neat push & pull move to draw Boulware forward out of position, giving Weatherd a wide B gap to jump through. Chris capitalized quickly on the hole and was in to tag the QB before the OLinemen fully figured out what was going on.

Win for the DLine, 2-2.

--5th Rep--
78 Mosley at LG, 74 Blair at LT vs 1 McKenzie at DT, 40 Mixon at DE

Mixon slanted in onto the guard, inviting a double team. Meanwhile, McKenzie bounced outside. Blair pulled off the double team to pick up KMac well, but as the whistle blew, Mixon was blowing past Mosley right into the QB's face.

Win for the DLine (but close), 3-2.

--6th Rep--
50 Boulware at RG, 51 Richmond (?) at RT vs 58 Williams at DT, 19 Taylor at DE

Taylor was slow out of his stance, got stood up and pushed back by Boulware as he slanted inside. Meanwhile, Williams burst with a lot of energy right into Richmond, who gave ground while angling him away from the pocket. [note: Taylor's hands went up after the play, appealing something to the coaches -- holding, maybe? sound quality not good, but sounded like someone said, "don't touch his balls." Hehe, no idea what that was about]

Win for the OLine, 3-3.

--7th Rep--
63 Kendrick at LG, 77 Kerbyson at LT vs 95 O'Brien at DT, 56 Maggitt at DE

O'Brien pushed into the B gap with his left shoulder in Kendrick's chest, inviting the double team. Meanwhile, Maggitt starts pounding full speed for the outside edge. This causes Kendrick and Kerbyson to give up a good 6-7 yards, but they're keeping the pocket protected. Then, once the curtain is drawn way back, Maggitt stunts around O'Brien's back for the inside lane. Kendrick didn't see what was happening quick enough, stayed on O'Brien and allowed Maggitt to tag the QB. Best rep of the series, was plenty of talent to watch on both sides.

Win for the DLine, 4-3.

--8th Rep--
66 Jones at RG, 55 Thomas at RT vs 2 Tuttle at DT, 50 Vereen at DE

Tuttle and Jones stand each other up, with Jones giving a little ground but not a lot. Meanwhile, Vereen is shifting Thomas hard to the outside. Suddenly, Vereen shoots for the growing gap between the OLinemen, and you can see Jones' stretch to his right to help out while still trying to keep Tuttle in place with his left. It's not enough, as Vereen shoots through the gap to the QB, dragging the whole scrum along in his wake.

Win for the DLine, 5-3.

--9th Rep--
Appears to be a rematch of the 8th rep: Jones & Thomas vs Tuttle & Vereen

Couldn't see the first part of the rep because of observers' bodies (everyone seemed to be watching this rematch intently), but Vereen did something to get Thomas overbalanced, he got sucked forward and completely out of the play. Meanwhile, Jack Jones is managing Vereen while Tuttle stunts around behind to the outside, and then Jones is holding off both of them all by himself. Very impressive stand by the freshman. [truth in advertising: Jones did have a bit of Vereen's facemask in his hand at the very end, but it didn't appear intentional, just a man trying to manage two wildcats simultaneously]

Win for the OLine, 4-5.

--10th Rep--
63 Kendrick at LG, 77 Kerbyson at LT vs 90 Folger at DT, 42 Weatherd at DE

Surprisingly slow development of the play by the D, given Weatherd's speed...he looked like he had the role of inviting the double-team, but really didn't want to take on both those guys at once, heh. Kendrick and Kerbyson did a masterful job of managing the movement, had no problem protecting the pocket.

Win for the OLine, 5-5.

--11th Rep--
66 Jones at RG, 55 Thomas at RT vs 58 Williams at DT, 9 Barnett at DE

Inside-out stunt, but Coleman Thomas absolutely handles Derek Barnett, standing him up until Jack Jones can help from the side. That sideways push gets Barnett onto the ground, and he's out of the play by the time Williams becomes an issue; Thomas shifts to him at the end of the play, keeping the pocket protected. [the coaches went wild after the play, congratulating Jones and especially Thomas]

Win for the OLine, 6-5.

-------------------------------------------------------------

Summary of Reps:
  • reps for 7 DEs: Barnett (2), Maggitt, Vereen (2), Mixon (2), Weatherd (2), Phillips, Taylor [appeared that LaTroy Lewis was out, though not listed as missing, above]
  • reps for 6 DTs: Williams (2), O'Brien (2), Folger (2), Tuttle (2), McKenzie (2), Picou
  • reps for 4 OTs: Kerbyson (3-Left), Thomas (3-Right), Richmond (3-Right), Blair (2-Left) [Chance Hall out]
  • reps for 4 OGs: Kendrick (3-Left), Jones (3-Right), Boulware (3-Right), Mosley (2-Left) [Jashon Robertson out]

Summary of Ws & Ls:
  • OLine "won" 6 of the 11 reps
  • Curt Maggitt and Danny O'Brien are the only players who "won" every rep they were in. To be fair, Curt only had one rep; Danny had two; most of the OLine had 3 reps, making it harder to "win out"
  • Players who won more reps than they lost: Kendrick & Kerbyson, Jones & Thomas, Richmond & Boulware
  • Players who lost every rep they were in: Blair & Mosley on OLine, Phillips, Picou, and Taylor on DLine (to be fair, they all got only one rep each)

TL;DR: Hurts to lose Jackson, absolutely, but these 11 reps give some reason for optimism that it is not a lost season for our OLine...they did pretty well today.

EDIT: Sorry folks, looks like whoever initially posted the video with all this action has since removed it from public view: https://player.vimeo.com/video/135975732 ... a pity, because it was a fun one to study)

Great writeup and research JP.

And, remember everyone, Barnett/Maggitt are among the best in the nation at DE. And, by what you wrote, Kerbyson and Coleman are doing pretty well. Getting reps against Barnett/Maggitt are undeniably valuable for them in the Fall. We didn't have that tandem at DE at all this time last year.

The stunts/shoots iterated by JP are a huge reason communication is key for the zone blocking scheme.

I firmly believe that we don't win that '98 championship if Al Wilson wasn't such a great leader.

Player leadership is one of those intangibles that good teams have that you simply cannot coach or force onto the team. It has to be cultivated from within.

Correct, I consider Al Wilson, the heart and soul of that team....he was such a leader and coach on the field and off

Nice write up thanks. However, I checked the link and it was a RB session.

The video link was confusing. Showed RBs working on getting off and open for a check down pass.

Sorry about that, fellas. Looks like the link got changed after I watched it. Dunno if the original is still out thereon Youtube or not. When I copy/pasted the URL, it went to the other video clip. Sorry again that you couldn't watch it, was a good one.

I'm thinking Kendrick is only at guard while Robertson is out. I guess.

I dunno, man, Kendrick and Kerbyson looked like a pretty impressive left-side team in today's practice. That may prove to be a combo worth keeping, with Robertson & Thomas grouping up on the right side.

Meanwhile, Williams burst with a lot of energy right into Richmond, who gave ground while angling him away from the pocket. [note: Taylor's hands went up after the play, appealing something to the coaches -- holding, maybe? sound quality not good, but sounded like someone said, "don't touch his balls." Win for the OLine, 3-3.

--7th Rep--
63 Kendrick at LG, 77 Kerbyson at LT vs 95 O'Brien at DT, 56 Maggitt at DE

O'Brien pushed into the B gap with his left shoulder in Kendrick's chest, inviting the double team. Meanwhile, Maggitt starts pounding full speed for the outside edge. This causes Kendrick and Kerbyson to give up a good 6-7 yards, but they're keeping the pocket protected.

Sorry about that, fellas. Looks like the link got changed after I watched it. Dunno if the original is still out thereon Youtube or not. When I copy/pasted the URL, it went to the other video clip. Sorry again that you couldn't watch it, was a good one.

Thanks for your excellent narrative. The read makes me think that the O-line play might be just a bit better this year, and then some.

I dunno, man, Kendrick and Kerbyson looked like a pretty impressive left-side team in today's practice. That may prove to be a combo worth keeping, with Robertson & Thomas grouping up on the right side.

Yeah. If Thomas steps up this year that would be possible. I always have faith a player can be good until they ultimately prove otherwise.

And thanks for the breakdown, good read.

Nice VFL-82-JP - much appreciated!

(I couldn't see the video; reminded me of my younger days 'watching' the radio with my dad & visualizing the action with John Ward's play by play as our eyes!)
