Tennessee kicked off basketball practice this week, and while Rick Barnes has kept practice closed, some early buzz has filtered out about this team. As we’ve been saying for months, those we’ve spoken with close to the program don’t think that the Vols are going to take as big of a step back from last year’s 31-6 team as some on the outside may think. Now, no one is suggesting that this team is going to spend a month ranked No. 1, but there’s a quiet confidence around this squad that they’ll compete for the SEC title and head back to the NCAA Tournament for the third consecutive year under Barnes. It’s no surprise that the thought right now is that the backcourt will be the strength of this team. Lamonte Turner is generating some big-time buzz for how he’s playing right now. Someone even suggested to us this week that Turner could challenge for the SEC Player of the Year given how he looks right now. In any event, he and Jordan Bowden could both potentially be All-SEC caliber performers and Josiah James has not disappointed.
