*****Portal Watch

All these bullpen arms leaving, do we have younger pitchers ready to fill those slots, or are we going to have to look to the portal for replacements? Also, why are all these BP arms leaving? Did Frank piss in their Cheerios? Loy, Behnke, Breedlove.... Are they ALL wanting to be starters?

I would guess portal.

Honestly, I would be pleasantly surprised if any rising (true) junior from last season's roster returned next year.

Hmm. I’m not sure I buy this but who really knows. Elected to go in a different direction from one of the best players in the portal?
Most likely means NIL didn’t line up. Or maybe it was a situation like the kid that went to Florida last year that CTV was talking about after Evansville?

Must have missed that. What's the story? Is there a link?
Go watch the Evansville game 3 press conference.

Don’t remember exactly when but at some point Tony talks about “if you’re in the portal, and you’re looking to get a payday coming here, don’t bother” something along those lines.

He was talking about a kid in the portal that ended up going to Florida

Blake Cyr that transferred to UF from Miami.

Happens more than you think. Sometimes guys aren’t a good fit and the hosting players will let coaches know. Sometimes they are more concerned w NIL than winnIng championships. Sometimes coaches see red flags on visits and pull the plug.

Blake Cyr. Transferred from Miami to FL for $$$$

I think some of ours are leaving because they think they can get more money other places. I think most of them are leaving because they want a different role. I tell high school guys all the time that are pitchers . You better learn how to come in out of the bullpen. Kirby had only come out of the bullpen two times in high school before UT and it is tough. It is a different mentality and especially if you are a guy who only faces certain other guys.

Interesting that only one has announced a new school (Crabtree to Southern Miss) I imagine others are working to line up deals before officially going into the portal (unless they’ve been nudged, or told they aren’t in TN’s plans for 2026).

There are several that are going on visits, including to other SEC schools. I think many are weighing options at this point.

One would assume that if a player announces their intent to enter the portal publicly, the staff will move on from them regardless? I'd consider them gone and look to fill their spot. Wouldn't consider taking them back unless the bottom fell out of our portal efforts or we had no one better behind them. Doubt either scenario exists at UT under Vitello.

Agreed. No way you take a player back once they enter the portal. You‘re either a Vol, or you’re not. I wish them well but no VFLs in the portal.

I kinda agree with that statement but it is interesting that many on here have called players who left for other places VFL's. I'm new to this to some extent but I would not consider someone a Vol For Life who transferred to another school to finish. But again I'm new to it.

💯. Examples of indisputable VFLs: Hunter Ensley, Kirby Connell, Trey Lipscomb, Zander Sechrist, Evan Russell, etc.

i understand if you are asked to leave, but if you leave on your own, no VFL.

PS. I still have a soft spot for Kyle Booker even though he left for Oral Roberts. He came to every Regional and Super in 23 even though he wasn’t on the active roster. He was in the dugout and coached 1B for an inning at the Kodak scrimmage last year. You can tell he is respected by his former coaches and teammates, and the young man was always very engaging and courteous in my few dealings with him.
