Why not push him out the door if he was such a huge problem, as others are saying? Heupel knows the most important thing is winning. If he mis-evaluated Nico, why not fix the problem?

Again, if Nico was such a problem, why not push him into the winter portal and find your new QB then? There were better options then, plus it would have allowed a new QB to go through Spring practice. And no reason to keep Nico around on a crazy NIL deal if he couldn't get it done.

My personal opinion, I'm not sure Nico was the problem people say he was. I thought he played tough in the bowl game and was looking forward to his growth this season. I think the real problem was the family, not the kid. But the kid didn't have the backbone to stand up to his family. As such, I hope he sucks at UCLA, but my fear is he has a spectacular season and makes us look dumb. Why? Because if UCLA can unlock his potential whereas we could not, that's gonna hurt on the recruiting trail. And as for Joey A., I hope he comes here and balls out, but I need to see it. Having great numbers at Appy State isn't the same as playing in the SEC. And we have a lot of question marks going into next season. People seem to think it's a sin to admit that.
What QB was in the winter portal that you think would have come here to compete with Nico and push him out the door?

The coach's job is not to catch the ball or to hit an open receiver. If there are consistently wide open receivers, the coaches are doing their job. At some point, it is actually up to the player to catch the ball when it hits their hands or to hit an open receiver with the ball.

If we constantly have WR's being near the top of the SEC in dropped passes, the Coach's are NOT doing their jobs. Catching, Route running and blocking are what they get taught along with the playbook of course..Exactly why different WR Coach's use different tactics to teach their WR's how to catch the ball. And let's face it, the WR's routes are as basic as they come in our offense. The routes aren't very difficult, which has been the knock on our WR's and getting them ready for the NFL.Even Hyatt, most of his catches were basic, straight lines routes. He was just out running everyone, which is why he's struggled in the NFL. You've got to be a great route runner up there or you won't be successful. Relying on just speed as a WR in the NFL won't have you being a super successful NFL WR.

Look at Cordarrell Patterson. He was always going to be be one of the fastest guys on the field, especially early in his career. The knock on him, his route running sucked and was never able to be even a decent route runner. Plus, he had a learning disability that also hurt him. Exactly why he moved to RB.

John Mateer would be at the top. He's going to have Oklahoma much more competitive this year. The 2023 version of Carson Beck would have been another. Just depends on which version of him you get. I'd put Miller Moss, Fernando Mendoza, Darian Mensah and Maalik Murphy up there too that could have all beaten Nico out. All of them can hit the deep ball, can process and make quick decisions and have displayed high Football IQ on the field..All of which Nico struggled with.

How many high level QB recruits do you think we get after bringing in transfer portal QBs to push out our freshman that was just in the playoffs?

You are just always looking for a negative spin

Weezer: Nico didn’t have a good year but he is gonna go to UCLA and ball out. (Even though their offensive staff has never proven anything)

Also Weezer: Aguilar was productive but he’s gonna come here and stink it up (even though Heupel has a well documented history of producing excellent QB play)

Literally going against logic and prior results just for the sake of being negative.

I put him on ignore a long time ago. What you said plus he just posts way too much.

All of those guys were THE guy at their school and transferred to another team where they’d be THE guy. None went where they’d have to compete with someone like Nico.

Mensah and Mateer are the only I think are actually as good as Nico, and they both got $3 mil or more. We aren’t paying that to hopefully push Nico out. That’s crazy and a bad look. The rest of those guys aren’t better than Nico.

Also, if this were December 2024, days to weeks before we were about to play OSU in the playoff, and we signed one of those guys, because that’s when they all committed, can you imagine the fallout? It would have been terrible nationally, on the team, and on here. Before Nico sat out that last spring practice, I think there are very few on here who would have been saying that they’d take any of those guys over Nico.

Georgia led the SEC with three of the top 11 in dropped passes, including Arian Smith at #1. LSU and Ole Miss each had two of the top 11. Alabama had Ryan Williams with the second most drops. Texas, Arkansas, and Tennessee had one each on that list. I guess that means the coaches at those other schools did NOT do their jobs, either.
Also, Cordarrelle Patterson seems to have done pretty well for himself in the NFL, even if it isn't at WR.

To be fair, Weezer is far from alone in those ridiculous assessments.

And you lack reading comprehension. But don't feel bad, you're not the only one. I never said Nico was going to go to UCLA and ball out. I said I feared that he would. I also said I hoped Joey A. would ball out. At no point did I make definitive statements about what would happen.

You keep borrowing trouble chicken little and worry about what ifs. I’m gonna be over here enjoying the resurgence of everything Tennessee athletics

My guess is reality was a lot more in the middle than the two narratives going around about Nico. Probably were some signs but nothing to the extreme picture being painted by some now. Just human nature to trash someone who leaves your team. I do think blaming the family for everything is pretty weak. The reality is Nico is an adult and responsible for Nico. If he is that immature and mentally weak too not make his own decisions he is not a leader and will not be an elite quarterback. Leadership is a major factor in success at the quarterback position. Just my opinion.

"I'm getting in the portal, if you need to handle your business," Iamaleava said as he was walking off the practice field, according to a Tennessee player who heard him say it.

One of the teammates went to Heupel to alert him. Heupel met with Iamaleava to make sure everything was OK and didn't mention anything about the information coming from teammates, and Iamaleava assured his coach that everything was good and that it was "all a bunch of rumors."
