So which is it? The one year Burns coached him made all the difference in the world.
Or the one year Pope coached him had no affect at all.

Looks like your just too stubborn to acknowledge Pope's influence.
it was more of the scheme for hyatt imo, theres a reason he has hardly seen the field in the nfl. Even IF it was Pope that “developed” him, wouldn’t we have had better wr’s last year and year before? Instead theyve regressed each year

I don't disagree with the first bolded part. Scheme had alot to do with Hyatt.

Disagree with the second part though. I've seen countless open receivers that were overthrown over the last two years.

There were several overthrown from hooker too, I remember vs uga in ‘21 we had velus open for a 75 yard td play one and hooker overthrew him

Saw plenty of drops, too. I understand the tendency to want to blame the guy no longer here, but there were problems on both sides. I have not been impressed by Pope. Should we be criticizing Halzle as well? He was the coach of the guy people are saying overthrew the WRs.

What I don't really understand is the tendency to blame the coaches for the players' execution issues.

If we want to deal with facts, then Pope was the WR coach when Hyatt won the Biletnikoff. Hyatt even stated that he didn't take it serious enough in 2021.

If we want to just speculate and discuss erroneous information, then carry on.

Hooker made Hyatt look good, not Pope. As we've seen by his lack of NFL success. And who has progressed under Pope the last 2 years? Squirrel just continued to get worse, Brazzell was horrible last year. But, the last 2 years we've had 2 different guys at the top or near the top of the dropped pass category in the SEC! Guess he can use that as a recruiting pitch! So, hush now little lady! You're dismissed, carry on!

That's kind of the Coach's job. If Coach's are going to get credit for developing WR's, then they have to be equally responsible when they aren't developing, right? Can't be one and not the other.

The coach's job is not to catch the ball or to hit an open receiver. If there are consistently wide open receivers, the coaches are doing their job. At some point, it is actually up to the player to catch the ball when it hits their hands or to hit an open receiver with the ball.

Hooker was great. I don't really see how he necessarily made Hyatt look good, though. If you want to argue that Hyatt was helped by the scheme, that is fair. Hooker didn't cause Hyatt to be routinely open by 10-15 yards down the field, though. He did do a very good job of getting him the ball.

Mainly because the coaches get paid to take that responsibility. They're responsible for their units. When the entire unit underachieves, that's on them.

Routes aren't the only thing a WR coach teaches. Catching IS part of what they teach. That's why they work the jugs machine.

That's a fair point. However, you then also have to give him credit when his unit performs at a high level like they did in 2022 for the same reasoning.

Facts are still facts.

It’s always odd to me when fans criticize when things are bad but don’t praise when things are good. But that’s the VN way. Pope was the analyst when Burns was here one year. He’s had an SEC leading 22 one hundred yard games from WR’s. He currently has 4 WR’s who were top 250 and another that was a 4 star.

I’ve never said he’s elite, but he’s coached and developed receivers. The offense hasn’t been struggling because of just receivers. Anyone with eyes and watched film can see that our receivers are open in every game. We need a QB to get it to them, too,

I didn't intend to suggest otherwise. Teaching WRs how to catch doesn't guarantee the player is going to make the catch when the time comes, though. Execution is an equal part of the equation. The players aren't robots that you can simply program.

The past two seasons they've underperformed. If they underperform for a third straight season, he should be replaced. Feel the same about Elarbee. Get your units right or find a new job. That's JMO.

This ignores there were times Heupel himself said the WRs ran the wrong routes, and the ball was thrown where they were supposed to be. And yes, there were overthrows, but there were also drops.

Hyatt had issues with drops in 2021 yet he didn’t in 2022. I guess that’s not any credit to coaching either.
Some credit to coaching, but that's just one WR of many. Credit also goes to Hyatt himself, who took extra time on the jugs to work it out.

And if the WRs shine this season, I'll eat crow. I did it with Willie Mac last season when his unit shined. I'll hope to do it again. But if the WRs continue to underperform, a change should be made.
