Ride with Shrout/Maurer no matter the outcome of games . you're gonna lose with JG so there is nothing to lose.

One or both may turn out to be pretty good, if not, it will be easy with Bailey to start the first game with JG pouting somewhere else
Shrouts mechanics are a little funky but he's got a cannon but he's a true pro style QB, don't think you'll such much elusiveness. Not sure about Maurer, havent seen film on him but I assume he's a little more mobile. Weinke said pre-season that he has that 'it' factor. I think you do a rotational QB unit at this point.

Guys...
He averaged 10 yards a completion.

He had a TD at the beginning of the game
Had a TD at the end of the game.
Volnation, that's called having a complete game!

Lets PACK Neyland Stadium and watch our Vols as Jarrett Gaurantano makes his 3rd start of the season to take on the Mocs.!
The TD at the beginning was pure luck obviously and the TD at the end was all Jennings.

And in between was one of the worst QB performances I've seen here at UT and we've had some real gems.

So hush.

Liked your post but Maurer may be better than a game manager. If not immediately, at some point. He has a little bit of that "Johnny Football" in him too. The coaches have remarked how he is able to make plays after the play breaks down.

And that's great if he turns out to be more, but I would still try and go ground and pound. We need to minimize how much we ask of him early in his career, especially since we have minimal talent around him.

Ground and pound. If we have a 12 play drive, I want 7 or 8 of those to be runs. The 4 or 5 passes, I want play action, with 1 of those to be at least a 20 yd pass to keep the defense honest.

I'll take consistency over potential at this point.

UT at this point isn't capable of doing that. Maybe by the time they settle on a starting 5... but right now they can't do it.

I'd run then if the choice is Maurer give him RPOs and roll outs with a run pass option. I'd minimize the pure pocket passes early then increase them over time.

Are you still a kid if you hold a college degree in Psychology? Seems like a man to me. Old enough to handle being called a moron. He's not a kid by any definition.

I'm not even the one that called him a noron just don't understand anyone calling a grown man a kid. Calling him a kid seems to be more insulting to me. But just my opinion.

While you might give JG the start, I'm more inclined to give Shrout a half and Maurer the other. So what if it's a loss. We have to find out if we have a QB on the bench or not. JG is a spread killer, he seems good for scoring a TD or two LESS than expected. Kid just wilts under the lights.

I like the kid. He's got hella heart. But he just don't have "it". I'm not saying the backup QB is going to have "it", but without getting the chance, we'll never know if they have "it".

If you're wondering what "it" is. Watch the Texas vs LSU game. Both those QBs have "it".

JG missed 4 passes this week that literally lost this game for us. I think everyone else, besides the secondary in the 4th played very well. If I was one of the receivers, I'd have probably lost faith in JG at this point.

Edit: People calling JG a moron or anything offensive that doesn't pertain to football should seriously just stop posting or talking anything football with anyone. Go take out your frustration on your sister or cousins, like a true Gump, and not a kid trying to play football.

Absolutely he should be benched!

I fully expect him to throw another temper tantrum if it happens.

It will be off target, but he’ll throw it...........

It might be late too, as in he might not start pouting until Floriduh.....

He most definitely deserved to be pulled after the pick. Just remember this: his only TD in regulation was because Jennings wrested away the bobble.
He didn’t play well at all and was lucky he didn’t have at least 3 turnovers. Once BYU caught onto the stretch runs we had no other options as you knew JG wouldn’t lead us to the end zone. I was just hoping he wouldn’t lose the game for us late. From that standpoint I guess you probably are right that we should’ve made a change mid-game but I never thought they would.

I honestly didn’t think we would score in that first OT. I’d say most of us felt that way.

Going to be great to see Harrison Bailey come in and put his azz on the pine!! Bye Felicia.

The question is how much patience will we have with the next guy?

None. Unless Tua or Trevor transfers here, every QB will be the worst and the coach is always holding his best qb back lol.

JG sucks. He has regressed. He plays timid and holds the ball too long. When he does throw deep, its late.

However, remember Nathan Peterman over Worley at the Swamp? Maybe, as bad as JG is, he is the best QB on the roster. That's a sad truth perhaps. But don't assume the other QBs will do better.

I voted to bench because we are going to lose anyway, so who cares if the freshman stink it up. We already are a laughing stock.

I've defended him but he definitely wasn't good tonight. His TD pass to Jennings was complete luck and a terrible pass.
I have to, from illegitimate criticism and to the extent I thought he needed defending.

That said, it’s time to start looking elsewhere for answers at QB. For some inexplicable reason, despite clearly having a better, more accomplished OC, he’s taken a significant step back in his ability to see the field and protect the ball. Have no idea what’s going on with him, but we easily win that game last night if he’s just average to good.

This is well said, agree 100%

I believe it’s likely time to move on from a 3–yr starter who’s regressed in his ability to make smart decisions and see the field. It’s time to roll Shrout or Maurer out there and see how they respond, because this is a lost season and it sure appears JG isn’t gonna be the answer given how he’s performed to poorly to start the year.

You’re also 100% right about this fanbase though with regards to how they criticize QBs. They’ll immediately turn on the next guy just like they have JG, like they did Dobbs, like they did Worley, Crompton, etc, etc. Maurer or Shrout, just like Bailey in the future, they’re all gonna get the same dumb, mindless, “he sucks no matter what” treatment.

Tom Brady could start next week, hit his first 30 passes.....and there would be the same dumbasses on here calling for him to be benched when he didn’t complete pass #31. Just the way it is.

There’s a thread coming that highlights my thoughts on this same subject. I may be right, I may be wrong but we’ll never know until we try.

KBVol calling for a change at QB! Mark it down Nation the turning point has arrived. And I couldn’t agree more.

I have been in JG's corner because of the play of the O line and the beating he has taken. No doubt about it is his tough as nails. But it takes him to long to make up his mind. He is late with the ball at least 75% of the time. We are not going to reach the record I had hoped for so lets get one of the Freshmen some snaps. Which ever one is the nearest to being ready should get the start this coming Saturday against UTC. I do think the O line has improved and that is encouraging. The rotation process is to build experience and achieve depth. We should do that a QB! GO VOLS!

We have now lost 2 games we had no business losing. Bench him and all other upper class man that aren’t cutting it and give all the young guys 10 games to get experience for next year.

We need to find our base. As much of a fan of the potential of JG, he just does not have the football IQ to develop any further. He has no internal clock that tells him when to throw.

At this point, much like in 1988, we need our game manager. Jeff Francis was never going to compete for a Heismen, but he was a serviceable talent with a good football IQ.

We are at the point that we need to get someone that can understand basic football. Put in a run first mentality, and go play action. About a 60/40 or 55/45 split.

Focus on strength and conditioning, keep rotating a lot of linemen and RB, identify our talent at DB (not Taylor, he's got to go, he was lost), and turn every game into a gutter brawl.

We don't need "homeruns". Our backs showed last night we don't have breakaway speed or even a 2nd gear. Time to go ground and pound, try and keep it close enough that we are still in the game in the 4th qtr by stopping the mistakes, and hope we can gut out some wins.

Our fan base was at the game last night and also watching on TV.
A lot of fans just want to go see a good game. Continue trotting JG out and Pruitt may lose even more fans.
One critical point about fans is the cash they bring in....If you lose your fans then fans do not buy the Tennessee gear ect as they would if they were winning....My guess is that Phil knows the numbers as well as the Donors
