I look at it more this way.
You are going into a casino and your friend asks "what will you consider a successful night?". You reply that if you walk out 20k up you will be ecstatic.
Scenario 1 - you are up 10k and double down on your last bet and win.
Scenario 2 - you are up 40k and bet and lose 20k on your last bet.

In both scenarios you walk out 20k up, having met your predetermined level of ecstasy. Obviously scenario one will leave you feeling better in the short run because you didn't suffer a painful loss.....but you were also never in a position to be up 60k.

Under both scenarios you should feel damn good.
As the old adage goes that I believe was attributed to Phil….”They remember you for what you do in November”

Yes. Abject failure to beat Bama, FL and destroy LSU in Baton Rouge and be in the playoff discussion 22 months after the lowest point in program history and the laughingstock of college football.
Dumbass.
Edit: forgot not in off topic. 67 is my bud. He knows that’s a joke.

Peyton would probably disagree. He probably thinks they remember you for what you do in September.
But they are both wrong, they remember you for were you finish...and the highlights and lowlights that got you to that final point.

The Alabama game will be remembered with as much joy as the SC game will be remembered with agony.

What is the minimum requirement that will make 2023 a successful season?

Probably about 2-3 days to soon (at minimum) for a poll like this. CLEARLY...this season has been an incredible success based on all the facts and expectations...but you'll have a couple of folks who won't be able to think sanely after the horrible (only way to describe it) loss to a really weak SC team last night. And PLEASE....no one start a silly thread outlining just how massively we will beat Vandy. Should we win? Of course. Big? Absolutely. But those guys are on scholarships too and we hopefully will show up ready to play next Saturday night. Said it often but most never hear it..."THERE ARE NO CUPCAKES ANYMORE. NONE. THEY DON'T EXIST". If you think they do....take a giant step forward into 2022! Anybody can beat anybody at any time!

No. A first New Years 6/BCS-level bowl since 1999-2000 would still be huge as far as the season goes, whether that bowl game were to be Orange or Cotton.

Gosh I really wish you had made this vote publicly visible, because there are 19 deeply disadvantaged idiots here and I'd feel more comfortable knowing who they are.

EDIT: Oh good, it is visible.

I was about to say I thought I made it public

It's a roaring, out of the blue massive success. There is no failure in a football season when we beat Alabama, let alone beat Alabama, LSU and Florida and rise to #1 in the rankings. It's our most successful season in 25 years and one of the best we've ever had since color tv started. The only thing not successful about it is Hooker's horrible injury.

I’d be willing to bet if we were sitting at 8-3 with losses to Bama, LSU, and UGA? Everyone would call the season a success already. Coming into the season, I recall distinctly a large portion of this board predicting 8-4 with losses to UGA, Bama, and 2 possible losses between UK/LSU/USC/Mizzou—and, considering we’re in a year two of a new regime, that would be the makings for a great season.

Now we’re sitting at 9-2 with losses to UGA and USC, and it’s suddenly a failure? I mean, come on guys.

I get it. It sucks. It’s super disappointing to go from CFB to possible NY6 bowl in the span of 60 minutes. But to pivot to that suddenly being a failure? If you’re only metric in a clear rebuild is to make the playoff to consider a season a success? Most seasons will be a failure and we’ll just continue to cycle through coaches because short of a playoff birth will be considered so.

It’s only a failure in that we were lucky enough to be in position to make the playoffs and blew it but in the grand scheme of things we have to remember we were somewhat lucky to beat Pitt, Florida, and Bama this year and we all knew our defense wasn’t top 10 caliber

Heupel has us back way faster than we thought regardless. Keep getting better

Not a failure by any means.

Dissapointment? Also-f'n-lutely.

You beat Florida, Alabama and LSU. And still managed to lose 2 games.

Beat Vanderbilt and we win 10 regular season games for the first time in roughly 20 years. With a team that was not ranked in the preseason.

Nope. Not a failure. Not close.

Hitler invaded the Soviet Union and his troops got within sight of Moscow.
Napoleon invaded Russia and captured Moscow. were either successful?
It’s all about how you finish.
We got within sight of the promised land….

We can get over this Tennessee has been through worse

Amen. Short sighted fans don't realize that this season has likely been a catalyst for improved recruiting in future seasons. This is the kind of season where longer term momentum starts to build.

At 9-2, let's see how the faithful define this season.....

For the record, I am a major supporter of this this season being a massive success.
Ahhh, another useless F-ing poll! How about the pollster get a real F-ing job? Let's have a poll on whether the pollster needs to grow up & get a REAL F-ing job. Apparently, he is bored sitting home with nothing to do to entertain himself.
