Players who did not get a fair shake

As I look over the posts here on VN, it seems each year we (get) players who are deemed to be program changers; some are transfers and some are HS and JUCO recruits.

Not stating any criteria but asking, who are your top three candidates of players who did not seem to get a fair shake?

For me: Joey Matthews
Harrison Bailey
Brandon Stewart (Peyton was the correct choice)

I am QB heavy on my list but, I also think had Fulmer pushed, Jerry Colquit might have gotten his Sr year back. Also, Jalen Hurd could be on this list had Jones ran the I formation.
The I formation? With a Fullback? Who even had a Fullback during that time?

I heard this about him. The few times I ran into, he was polite but even alpt of the football players thought he was a douche.
Tennessee had the most talent under Fulmer from 2000-2004 than any other time and kind of underachieved with it
Yeah, kind of. You're a master of understatement.

Who was the kid at the end of Fulmers tenure who had tried 3/4 years to get on the team but the clearing house kept holding him back. Think he was a LB in high school but became a DT here.

Yeah, that 2001 team was loaded but something was missing. We now know that was coaching. That team might have won a championship under the current format, though.

Certainly great talent in that span, but I'm not sure it was quite like the talent from mid to late 90s

I think it speaks more to the level of QB play in the NFL in general than it does to Peterman.

But to be fair to all QB's in the NFL, the position has gotten vastly more demanding and complex than it used to be. We are a long ways away from Bart Starr at Green Bay, running sweep right/sweep left.
I’m guessing he must be great in the film room and on the white board. A lot of times that’s what teams are looking for out of a 3rd QB rather than someone who actually plays well.

If you go off NFL performance, it was arguably better. We had Travis Henry and Travis Stephens at RB, Jason Witten at TE, John Henderson and Albert Haynesmorth on the line, Andre Lott at LB, Kelly Washington and Donte Stallworth at WR, etc.

I don't think we were as talented as 2001 Miami or 2002 Ohio State but we definitely should have won at least an SEC Championship in that run. I was looking at all-time draft picks, Tennessee had the most in 2002.

TBF, he was an epic arrogant douche.... I'm talking Biblical levels of douchery. The guy was a jerk in public on multiple occasions. I saw it firsthand working at East Town Mall as a teenager.

He sure could play and win on the road, though.
Yeah I got a few stories about him from back in the day as well. There was a reason some people will always kind of shrug him off. He could be a massive knob running around in plastic pink FUBU warmups.

I frankly don't know how we, as fans who did not see practice, did not see players compete with one another on a daily basis, and have no idea what each player's daily temperament and commitment was, could have any idea who did or did not get a fair shake.

But I guess that's what message boards are for.

Not sure how Bailey didn't get a fair shake?

Jack Jones.

Lad bled orange (still does, I"m sure), and should've had a full college and potentially pro career.

One tiny problem in his spine, and it all had to end.

Lad has a huge heart, just couldn't overcome that one narrow place in his vertebrae.

Go Vols!

I think he’d have ended up being a huge talent with a long NFL career

And he had the proper temperament to play for us in the trenches
