Players who did not get a fair shake

Hurd could have been an NFL RB but Butch’s offense was a horrible match for his skill set…imagine if Hurd had gone to Ohio State and lined up in the I. He’d of been in the Heisman hype and one of the first RBs picked. Butch took the second coming of Eddie George and make him an East/West runner looking for cut back seams. And to add insult to injury, he had the best possible RB for his offense and kept him second string.

Good coaches adjust their schemes to match their teams strengths - Butch would never be mistaken for a good coach.
You do realize Hurd was on pace to be the all time leading rusher at UT had he played 4 years and remained healthy?

Yall canblame CBJ all you want but Jalen Hurd was his own worst enemy

With the fans most definitely. He redeemed himself in the eyes of many by being so good down the stretch his senior year. He’s one of my favorites because that guy took an absolute beating and was able to put together an impressive senior season when you look at the numbers.

Anyone who still thinks Kiffin can't coach should really take a look at what he was able to turn Crompton into, with a fairly garbage team around him, his senior year.

Jalen Hurt came to UT because he would be allowed to play RB. At least that is what I remember. Other teams wanted him on the other side of the ball or at TE. He wanted to be a RB. Then he didn't.

Joey Matthews? Harrison Bailey? Joey Matthews was handed the job. Performance was poor, especially with the players around him.

Joey Matthews got all the shot he needed.
Man, this is rough coming from his people but gave some sort of an insight to how CPF ran things at the time.

Wow

Hendon Hooker. He was recruited by one coach who was fired before he got here. The new coach recruited over him and benched him. The guy starting over him went down to injury and could not get his job back from the young man.

Casey Clausen. Poor guy's only crime was he had to follow Peyton and Tee. Fans never fully embraced him and never truly appreciated how great he was until long after he was gone.

TBF, he was an epic arrogant douche.... I'm talking Biblical levels of douchery. The guy was a jerk in public on multiple occasions. I saw it firsthand working at East Town Mall as a teenager.

He sure could play and win on the road, though.

Quinten Dormady. Came out in 2018 looking good against GT. Things went downhill fast but I always thought he showed promise and played decent for the situation.

Obviously, his career was fairly successful after transferring out.

I never met the man and I could tell that just by the way he carried himself.

I never understood the Clausen hate. The dude was pretty solid.

He was mixed bag (not sure it was totally his fault). Funny story, he was at Tennessee when I was there and I had this joint class for all the students taking Spanish 201 or something. He sat in front of me and literally had a note book where he was practicing his autograph.

I heard this about him. The few times I ran into, he was polite but even alpt of the football players thought he was a douche.
Tennessee had the most talent under Fulmer from 2000-2004 than any other time and kind of underachieved with it

I used to create set lists for bands I liked in freshman and sophomore classes like that. No doubt his practice was more important than mine. He was the QB for a big time program and likely had autograph requests. Good for him

For me, Preston Williams is the one recruit that I think we could have got a lot more out of. His grades weren't great, but on the field he was a beast. Best HS recruiting tape from any WR I've seen. We simply did not incorporate him enough in the passing game which is why he chose to transfer. Then he goes to Colorado State and puts up 1300 yards in one season there. Butch really screwed the pooch with that one too.
