Players Speaking Up

Someone told me once that the Seahawks threw that interception in the SB and lost cause they didn't want Lynch to run it and win cause he was black.
Even though a black dude made the interception, and that's one of the most famous plays to have ever occurred in a SB? And the INT cost Russell Wilson, who is black (a black QB, no less), winning a SB? Interesting.

Yes, they do. They truly believe there is a huge plethora of successful African American coaches who are purposefully being ignored simply due to their skin color. They ignore unmitigated disasters who were hired like Mike Singletary, Hugh Jackson, Vance Joseph, Todd Bowles, and Romeo Crennel. There have been successes like Mike Tomlin, Tony Dungy, Dennis Green, Herman Edwards, and Jim Caldwell. My point being this notion that a team would refuse to hire a coach simply because he is black is nonsense. If a team thinks they can win with him, they will hire him.
There certainly is an evangelical belief on that side of the argument that any discrepancy between what you'd "expect" and what actually exists is because of racism. The league's players are 70% black, so that means 70% of the coaches and executives should be black. But why? It's never precisely explained, just that it's an indicator or racism that it's different from what you might expect.

Can't you turn that around and suggest that since 70% of the population is white that 70% of the players in the league should be white? You'd be laughed at if you suggested that, and rightly so, but they are essentially making the same argument about black coaches. 70% of the players in the league are black - is that because of racism? Are whites underrepresented, when compared to their numbers of the general population, because of racism? At various points in the recent history, there hasn't been a single white person on an NFL roster at cornerback. Racism?

13.4% of the population is black. There are currently 3 black head coaches, which makes up 9.375% of all NFL head coaches. In order to be in line with the rest of the population, there needs to be 1 more black head coach. Black head coaches actually aren't wildly underrepresented when compared to the population. I guess there needs to be an Asian head coach too, so they get fairly represented.

That was what I said. It was still racist apparently.

Why would you care what he says?

Seems as though many of our proud, resident Trump supporters share the same razor thin skin

Why do you care what acuna_matata says or any other poster on here who you quote? If he comments on something another person says, you say he has thin skin and he shouldn’t care. Meanwhile you comment on things said here all the time. So why do you care what they think? Why is your skin so thin? Seems as though critical, or hell even basic thinking is not one of your strong points.

Lots of people were quick to talk about Eric Bieniemy last year - Mahomes's OC, been an OC for a long time, etc. Was allegedly passed over due to racist GMs and owners (he never made that argument himself, but people in the media did). For every case like that, I can point to a case like Marvin Lewis.

Why did Bieniemy get passed over? I don't know. Why did Marvin Lewis get so many chances? I don't know. Not everything has some racial angle to it.

I have no problem with him, or anyone else, speaking out. I have a big problem with the attitude of "support my point of view" or else you're racist or guilty of whatever.

We all want equal treatment of all people. The question is how do you achieve that. And that's the part no one wants to focus on. It's easy to take a knee, march, tear down a statue, like something on facebook, hashtag something or wear a colored ribbon.

How are we going to fix the illegitimacy rate, the teenage pregnancy rate, the high school dropout rate, gang violence, drug abuse, etc, etc, etc?

No one wants to deal with that stuff.

My impression was that BLM only concerned one issue, death by police. But then we saw that any White against Black incident was embraced when the latter was a victim. Now it's the whole of our history.

I will choose to do what I want to do. I wont be told how to conduct myself. I do know this the black lives matter organization doesn't care one way or another about a black student athletes life. It's an organization that only cares about bringing down my country. If I am moved to not participate any longer in watching college sports due to its political stance so be it.

You can still watch professional sports! Oh wait

Former Lady Vol Kara Lawson calls out lack of Diversity at highest levels of Tennessee Athletics

"When I look at my alma mater, Knoxville, there is not a single African-American coach at that institution. That is not the same for the majority of the SEC."

Leave it up to the leftist media to come up with a headline that doesn't match her words which also happens to be a damned lie. Stupid twit doesn't even know what her alma mater is called.

I wonder if she ever told Pat just how much it bothered her that there wasn’t enough black head coaches at Tennessee. If only we had not hired Pat , but instead hired a black coach for the sake of diversity.

He has been an OC for three years and Andy Reid runs that offense but yes I agree with you

Going to not just UT football games but a plethora of SEC sporting events for 30 years. I have never heard anyone call a player the N word. In fact, I cant even recall that word being used in the stands. F bombs? Yeah. C@&%$ucker bombs? Sure. Dumbass/Moron/idiot/A-hole? Yep. Racial slurs? Nope.
Me either.... I’m calling BS

My seats are 10 rows from the field. I’ve never heard it.

When you heard it did you try to identify or report the person who said it? I have a hard time believing other fans would tolerate that and the person would be identified and banned from UT events
no kidding.....that’s a word that will get you an ass whipping from both black and white people under certain circumstances.... one would be a fan yelling at the players.... no way that type of behavior is tolerated

Me either.... I’m calling BS
The ONLY incident I have seen in over 30 years of going to games (not all of them of course) was some drunk redneck morons giving some Buffalo fans sh!t when they started chanting "there is still time" as they were getting murdered by a Dooley team.

Texas LB DeMarvion Overshown to sit out until 'changes are made' at university

Texas linebacker DeMarvion Overshown says that until "real action" is taken regarding Longhorns players' demands that the university be more inclusive for Black athletes and the Black community, he will be "sitting out of all team activities."

"We have been told that things are being done behind close doors but have yet to see any changes," Overshown wrote in a tweet. "We are constantly preached urgency throughout the program and I feel that the university should be held to the same standard."

Last month, dozens of Longhorns athletes issued an unsigned, two-page statement requesting the school rename several campus buildings named after school officials with ties to its segregationist past. They also said the school should stop using "The Eyes of Texas," which has long been criticized for its connection to minstrel shows with characters in blackface in the early 1900s. It is regularly sung at nearly every organized campus event, and players in all sports gather as a team to sing it after every game.

Other requests included the installation of more diverse statues designed by people of color; a permanent Black athletic history in the school's athletics Hall of Honor; and the renaming of part of Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium after Julius Whittier, the Longhorns' first Black player.

Longhorns LB to sit out until 'real action is taken'
Let him sit.....I’m sure TSU, Grambling, Southern or Fla A&M would welcome him

Typically, the better athletes don’t make good coaches. It’s the players that sit the bench and watch the games or the ones that have marginal success as a player.

Texas responds to football players' requests with sweeping changes

A month after Texas football players requested a list of changes be made on campus, Texas has responded with to a sweeping plan to "redefine campus symbolism," including the renaming of Texas' football field for Earl Campbell and Ricky Williams and a statue for Texas' first Black football letterman.

On June 12, Longhorns players released a statement requesting the removal of "The Eyes of Texas" as the school song, the renaming of four campus buildings that are named after Confederate or racist figures, more diverse statues by people of color, a permanent Black athletic history in the school's athletics Hall of Honor and the renaming of part of Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium after Julius Whittier, who in 1970 became the first Black player to letter for the Longhorns.

On Monday, Texas interim president Jay Hartzell announced a set of diversity initiatives that included "reconsidering how to best reflect the university's values, both in the symbols and names on campus and in the openness with which UT tells its history."

"The Eyes of Texas," sung before and after every football game, will remain. But the school said it will teach about its origins, which were in a minstrel show featuring performers in blackface in 1903, hoping "to reclaim and redefine what this song stands for, first by owning and acknowledging its history in a way that is open and transparent."

At Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium, Texas will erect a statue of Whittier. It will also rename Joe Jamail Field at the stadium in honor of Texas' two Heisman Trophy winners, Campbell and Williams, at the request of the family of the late Jamail, a prominent Texas booster.
