I just counted 70 current players on scholy. I’m not sure his accurate my count was. So by my count to sign 25 guys we will have to “lose” around 10 players.

So there will be many transfers coming or players quitting, medical, etc.

Does anyone have an exact count of how many players on scholarship we have returning for next year not counting incoming recruits and transfers?

I counted 68, but I could be wrong. Are you counting Brooks and Antonutti?

If we, as fans, are lucky, there will be transfers where some sub par players can find a team where they might find more success on the field which could open up some scholarships thus allowing CJP to recruit over CBJ's mediocre players.
I usually don't like to get into discussions on players who should leave the program, but I get your point. Saban has had a lot of success in this area. CJP should be allowed to have the players he wants on the roster. I am sure he and his staff will sort things out.

Someone did a thorough count and said if we sign 25, we'd need to lose 13 by next Fall. I believe we have now lost 4 (Osborne, Sapp, Tanner, Devante), so 9 more to go.

The tough part is convincing guys to leave on their own. We can't just cut em or not renew their scholly. Takes some serious tact.

According to 247 with the signees we have 92 so we need 7 to leave according to them. 18 are OL would think we might try to trim that to 15. That would get us to 89. 12 WR probably down to 10 to get us to 87. 9 TE should be where the rest of the cuts should come. Still expecting 6 more signees in February so need some more open spots still looking at the numbers you would think right now TE, OL, and WR would be where they would come from.

I’m sure Pruitt is giving these 13 kids advanced notice. Probably hear of a few more leaving/medical redshirting before spring practice.

9 TE? That sounds like an excessive amount.

Yeah, but I mean all he can do is tell them they won't play a snap here. Can't do much more to nudge them out. I'm sure a few are stubborn and will just stay.

I wonder if they wait on the OC hire before they do anymore trimming. Maybe let the new one get an input on what kind of players he may want for his system.

maybe someone who knows can explain the one year scholarship rule which I understand is the norm.

If it is ONE YEAR then it has to be renewed every year it seems to me.

If a player is not cutting it and just taking up a scholarship, why does he have to be included next year?

Is it not as simple as a non renewal?

anybody know?

From what I was told, most of the hinting and nudging is done during exit interviews, before kids leave for break. If or when those kids decide to transfer, is up to them.

And the names I see are of kids that wouldn't contribute under any system. Someone mentioned 9 TEs...go look at that list and tell me you don't see 3 or 4 names there alone.

Not how it works anymore, since 2015. P5 conferences passed guaranteed multi-year schollies. Cannot choose to cancel/not renew due to athletic performance.

How they technically sctructure them is meaningless now. They all operate as 4 year schollies. I figure they just hand out 4 year ones to save paperwork, but who knows? Would seem silly to do 1 year renewables when there is no purpose.

It's become the resting spot for players that will never play anywhere else.
Bumphus can play DE and most likely is in his way there. They didn’t have a TE with his size but now we have two. DWA and Wolf are in their last seasons Warren and Brown are receiving TE’s that the jury’s out on. Pope is safe if he’s able to play but he may be a medical candidate. Are the other TE’s scholarship? I see us as having 4 scholarship TE’s pending recruiting results next season.

I actually had a thought that maybe part of the reason for waiting on hiring/announcing an OC is to recruit who he wants and push out who he wants without any discussion or interference from an OC.

Blakely is listed as a TE and we have 2 coming in.
