Player’s careers ruined by coaches

Joey Matthews is the worst QB to ever start a game at Tennessee in at least the past 60 years. It’s hard to even have a serious conversation if you are going to imply that he is a victim of bad coaching.

I forget the young man's name who was a senior Butch's first year on The Hill. He was obviously a drop back QB and that offense required him to run the ball some. He's the only QB in college I ever saw who would run an option play and rarely keep it. He'd been around long enough to know he had no business ever turning one up the field. He's the worst UT QB I ever saw play. All our opponents knew what was happening and pretty much killed any option play.

He was better than Joey Matthews and led what is probably still one of our 5 best wins of the post-Fulmer era when we beat a Spurrier South Carolina team that finished 5th in the nation.

Yeah while Justin Worley wasn't a great fit in Butch's offense, he is nowhere near the worst QB we have trotted out there.

I wouldn't say his career was ruined since he has been in the NFL now for almost a decade and has technically produced more in that league than any Tennessee QB since Peyton, but Josh Dobbs. He was great and arguably a Top 4 QB in TN history, but he could've been so much better if we had an actual QB coach on staff. He just developed some bad habits that have hindered his ability at the next level.

He got a lot more good QB coaching from Mike Debord than most people think. Debord was a hell of a coach. His boss made everything seem suspect.

I thought it was Peterman. There was a moment where I thought he had honestly never seen or touched a football before.

I will say that Peterman had the worst performances I have ever seen from a Vol. And then he went on to be the worst QB statistically in the history of the NFL. But, the fact that he was okay at Pitt and actually made the NFL does give him a leg up on Joey Matthews.

A couple that I don't know if they have been mentioned.

1. Khalil McKenzie. As soon as he got to the NFL, they converted him to offensive line. May have been drafted higher and had longer NFL career had the coaching staff recognized that and had him play offensive line at UT instead of learning in the league.

2. Jonathan Kongbo. Seem to remember him being the top JUCO recruit, but don't remember him being developed into an impact player. Got hurt so might not be all on the coaching staff.

I remember Kongbo ran down a RB from behind in the 1st series of a game. I never saw him again the rest of the game.

He got a lot more good QB coaching from Mike Debord than most people think. Debord was a hell of a coach. His boss made everything seem suspect.

DeBord wasn’t even really his QB coach, we were letting a grad assistant handle that, Nick Sheridan.

Fulmer ruined Brian Darden

Bobby Bowden and Jackie Sherrill told him the truth, that he would be better at DB. Fulmer didn’t and paid him more to keep him way from his competition.

Good recruiting tactic….he’s he plays for you he’s not playing against you.

Believe Tennessee was suckered into taking him as Auburn was heavily recruiting him.
