Player’s careers ruined by coaches

Joey Matthews is the worst QB to ever start a game at Tennessee in at least the past 60 years. It’s hard to even have a serious conversation if you are going to imply that he is a victim of bad coaching.
I forget the young man's name who was a senior Butch's first year on The Hill. He was obviously a drop back QB and that offense required him to run the ball some. He's the only QB in college I ever saw who would run an option play and rarely keep it. He'd been around long enough to know he had no business ever turning one up the field. He's the worst UT QB I ever saw play. All our opponents knew what was happening and pretty much killed any option play.

Justin Worley. He was actually a junior Butch’s first year. I agree he handed it off too much, but some of those were not true option plays, he just ran after the handoff to keep defenses honest.

He was better than Joey Matthews and led what is probably still one of our 5 best wins of the post-Fulmer era when we beat a Spurrier South Carolina team that finished 5th in the nation.

Yeah while Justin Worley wasn't a great fit in Butch's offense, he is nowhere near the worst QB we have trotted out there.

I thought it was Peterman. There was a moment where I thought he had honestly never seen or touched a football before.

I wouldn't say his career was ruined since he has been in the NFL now for almost a decade and has technically produced more in that league than any Tennessee QB since Peyton, but Josh Dobbs. He was great and arguably a Top 4 QB in TN history, but he could've been so much better if we had an actual QB coach on staff. He just developed some bad habits that have hindered his ability at the next level.
He got a lot more good QB coaching from Mike Debord than most people think. Debord was a hell of a coach. His boss made everything seem suspect.

I will say that Peterman had the worst performances I have ever seen from a Vol. And then he went on to be the worst QB statistically in the history of the NFL. But, the fact that he was okay at Pitt and actually made the NFL does give him a leg up on Joey Matthews.

A couple that I don't know if they have been mentioned.

1. Khalil McKenzie. As soon as he got to the NFL, they converted him to offensive line. May have been drafted higher and had longer NFL career had the coaching staff recognized that and had him play offensive line at UT instead of learning in the league.

2. Jonathan Kongbo. Seem to remember him being the top JUCO recruit, but don't remember him being developed into an impact player. Got hurt so might not be all on the coaching staff.
I remember Kongbo ran down a RB from behind in the 1st series of a game. I never saw him again the rest of the game.

I actually remember him keeping it that one time. Does anyone else?

It was around left end.

Fulmer ruined Brian Darden

Bobby Bowden and Jackie Sherrill told him the truth, that he would be better at DB. Fulmer didn’t and paid him more to keep him way from his competition.
Darden was the #1 RB in his recruiting class. Could it have been that Darden wanted to be a RB and did not want to play CB? I followed the Vols really closely at that time and don't ever recall anyone on Gridscape (the forerunner to this website) ever mentioning that Darden should be a DB. We were pretty stacked at DB then. Could it be that Darden had no chance of beating out the other DB's on the roster for a role in the 2-deep (Fred White, Deon Grant, Tori Noel, Terry Fair, Dwayne Goodrich, Corey Gaines, Steve Johnson, Andre Lott, Tad Golden)?

That is one of the craziest things I’ve ever seen. Crompton was a complete bust for 4+ years and Kiffin finally whittled the playbook down to a bunch of high/low throws on one side of the field. Part of it was probably all the OCs we went through, but Crompton just couldn’t process an offense.
Crompton tore his labrum earlier in his career. I know this because my son tore his labrum about a year before Crompton and I talked to Crompton's mom about it. It takes a long time to fully recover from a torn labrum, if you ever do. My son had a minor labrum tear and was operated on by Dr. James Andrews and he never fully recovered.

McBride was who I was trying to think of.
Idiot Lyle passed on a tall, athletic Dresser Winn from Dresden, TN and took McBride. Danny Parker (former "Vol Nation" analyst/correspondent) and I watched Winn in the state championship game and thought Winn was MUCH better than McBride. During high school, he completed 145 out of 196 passing attempts for 2,928 yards with 38 touchdowns and eight interceptions while rushing for 739 yards and six scores on 82 carries, and won a state championship, passing for 245 yds. and 5 TDs and rushing for 67 yds. on 14 carries. Had an injury-plagued career at UT-Martin but still showed enough to get a contract with the Rams. He's been under contract with the Rams three different times. He was 15/23 for 190 yds. and a TD in preseason this year. Didn't make the final cut. Played in CFL and USFL.
