Philip Fulmer

Its hard not to appreciate a guy that brought you a NCAA Championship. Even though he undercut Majors, he still got her done.😁
Yeah it was really low of him to win all those early games before Johnny forced his way back early from those heart issues and lost those next games, while according to many refusing to sign a deal on the table without more money.

Love me some Johnny, lived within 10 miles of Huntland for a decade. My favorite Aunt on the wife’s side mother used to babysit the younger Majors kids (saw pictures to prove it last month) saw a new log home at their homesite while on a tour. Great VOL family, but humility was not a strength of Johnny.

Both those Franklin County educated guys belong on any Mount Rushmore of UT coaches.

Vols had 2 coaches for 35 years. Both were great Vol players too. Fulmer was a superb athlete and catcher for a state tournament baseball team.

I vote for statues of Phil and John Majors while leaving a prominent spot for Josh Heupel.

To be fair, several of those bama teams were not good.

1. It’s Alabama. I don’t care if they have 3 wins on the year, THEY’RE DANGEROUS. Go look at the scores of those games. They fought us tooth and nail, even when they were bad.

2. 2007-2021, how many of those Tennessee teams were good? I’m counting 3 that won 9 games or more. So Bama only beat 3 good UT teams in the 15 year streak. Do Bama fans give a flying f*** about that? No. Because it’s not their problem UT couldn’t put a competitive team on the field just like it wasn’t ours that they couldn’t do the same from 1995-2006.

Did what he needed to do to hang on to Barnes so I’ll give him that but the Pruitt hire was a doozy. Only good part was he violated the rules and didn’t stay too long which opened up the door for Danny and Josh.

Pruitt was such a POS. I have no clue what CPF saw in him.

Kinda the best of the worst is my only guess. So many people passed on the job after Curry screwed the pooch that hiring a DC from a national championship contender seemed like a good move. I’m still convinced that he was a Bama plant intending to screw the program up even more. He did coach his ass off against Auburn which unironically happens to be the one team that bama hates more than us.

The rest of the time he was disinterested and blamed JG for everything.

Mel Tucker wasn’t great and obviously had other issues, but he would’ve been way better than Pruitt and he interviewed right alongside him.

Happy Birthday Coach..!!
Your success at UT is awesome and that alone makes you a man to admire. Beyond that however… something very few folks know is the kindness you’ve shown within the VOL family, outside the Football program. I’m taking this opportunity to thank you for something special you did. It’s been quite a few years back, you were competing in a Golf tournament of some sort, not far from Loudon, TN. Someone who knew you AND knew my Father in law, Mr. J.D.Bright told you that JD was a lifelong Vol fan despite having never attended,( but did get his two daughters through)…and that JD was dying of Cancer and would be thrilled to meet you. I have always wanted to thank you personally, but our paths never crossed. This seems like a chance for me to let folks know what a really great guy you are, on and off the field.
THANKS COACH.

Fulmer wanted Tucker. He was over ruled because certain people preferred Pruitt... AD's don't always get the coach they want for FB or BB... Money has influence and always will.

Happy Belated Birthday Coach Fulmer! Still got the 2nd best winning percentage behind Neyland ! I’ve said , and I’ll say it again , firing Fulmer in 08 , was the worst mistake UT has ever made ! PERIOD!!
Fulmer was way past his prime in 08 and he should've gotten fired. That said, the clown show after that was the biggest mistake.

Mel Tucker wasn’t great and obviously had other issues, but he would’ve been way better than Pruitt and he interviewed right alongside him.the THREE, Steele, with Vol history, was my choice, thought we might get him as interim with a shot.

Of the THREE, I was rooting for the Vol, Steele. Thought we could have got him as an ā€œinterim with a shotā€.

Don’t think there was a winner among them, but he picked the biggest loser and paid the price.

I am convinced, even though the NCAA processes were drawn out, his clean history, service as coaches leader, and publicly stepping away kept the pain down. Pruitt’s arrogant and systematic deals left too many undeniable tracks and leadership playing the denial card could have been uglier. All three leaders worked in concert to make the DW and CJH transition possible.

We need him to be around for more untainted 98’ anniversary celebrations.
