Maybe,Maybe not, But do we want a trial and see guy, at the lowest point in UT history??
I dont , UT players or not
Tee Martin might come to UT as head coach and just be another Mike Shula, a former star QB who came home to a big-time program and turned out to be over his head. It's certainly possible.
At the same time, though, Shula had never coached a day in college football; he'd only been in the NFL. And part of the reason he broke into coaching right away is because of his last name. Tee Martin is OC at USC right now because he earned his way there, not because he was born on third base and everyone thought he hit a triple.
He's 39 years old, and that's about the age where most highly successful coaches get their first HC gig at a major college program. Barry Switzer and Tom Osborne were both 36, Bob Stoops was 39, Urban Meyer was 37, Nick Saban was 39, Phil Fulmer was 42, and there are a bunch of others I could rattle off, too. And all of them were coordinators who were getting their first HC assignment.
In other words, Tee Martin is as ready as he's ever going to be, if he's going to be that caliber of coach. Which, of course, is a big "if." But we're not in this for 7-5 seasons and Weedeater bowls, we're in it for the whole ball of wax. So, should UT hire some guy like Dave Doeren or Chad Morris who will probably deliver 7-5 seasons and Weedeater bowls, or should we take a chance on someone who might turn out to be like those guys I just mentioned?
Do I want the "trial and see" guy, who might be a home run, as opposed to the guy who will guarantee mediocrity? Yes, I do. And it doesn't have to be Tee Martin...if there's another guy out there with that profile who's better, great. But give me a guy like that any day over a guy we know won't get the job done the way we want it done.
