that's not true and it was falling in Pearl's last year too
Trend started while Pearl was still here
that's not true and it was falling in Pearl's last year too
Accurate post...it hasn't fallen every year since CCM was hired.that's not true and it was falling in Pearl's last year too
If you think about it and attendance at Basketball and Football games, they were both Trending downward. I mean nobody wanted to Support anything Hamilton had his hands on. We had lost Kiffin, the Dools was here, Martin was New, The AD was under extreme scrutiny by the NCAA and everybody was burnt out on the whole mess.
Significant Events all under Hamilton's Watch....NCAA investigation (x2), Losing Seasons in Football, Fulmer Forced Out, Kiffin Skipping Out, Dooley's Hire, Bruce Pearl and the NCAA, The Economy, Pat Summit's beginning of the end, Dools Buyout, Cheek's Financially breaking of the AD and his move to raise academic standards.
Face it, Football was king, Pearl brought our attention to basketball. When Football went on life support, everybody looked to Basketball as a relief, but then the Bottom fell out of basketball (Pat Summit disease comes to the forefront and Pearl's BBQ). Baseball with Raleigh never got out of the dump.
Hamiltion put the entire AD in a hole. The attendance maybe more reflective of a lack of support of Vol athletics than a coach. We are seeing improvement but face it, Pearl's showmanship and success was going to be a hard act to follow add all the other incidents not directly related to Basketball but to Vol Athletics across the board. Bad hires contributed to more than you think but the CCM hire is not the sole reason for the downward movement in attendance.
I hated giving money and watching the idiot (Hamilton) squander it based solely on saving a buck with an inability to read a contract. He must have had enough confidence in Dooley that he thought that he would never have to terminate him before 5 years were exhausted.
Why would anybody support that money management stupidity.
Accurate post...it hasn't fallen every year since CCM was hired.
However, saying the trend started while CBP was here is a bit misleading, IMO.
If I'm accurate, then in CBP's last year it fell by 216. In CCM's first year it fell by 2409...quite a bit of difference.
It will be interesting to see #'s for this season, and for next...assuming he's retained.
Personally, I know of a lot of folks who purchased tix while CBP was here...some that had never been season ticket holders before.
Can't say I know of any who are wanting to purchase now. In fact, most I know were trying to give their tix away for most of this year's games.
Oh well...guess they're just not VFL's.
I still say there's about 8 or so games that would totally have Martin in a different light. Had he made the NCAAT the last 2 years, we wouldn't be even talking about his job. I mean I'm sure there would be a minority still crowing about Pearl, but the end of his first year especially everyone wanted to embraces him. TBA was rocking for that last Vandy game and Martin got a ton of praise for the run the team went on.
In fact if he had just made it last year we probably wouldn't be having this conversation. Pearl was a hard act to follow but I still think the majority of UT fans want to win. Martin doesn't have the personality of Pearl, but he also isn't a jerk like Green was. I firmly believe the UT fanbase would embrace a nice guy who wins.
The reason for the significant drop in attendance (2,500-3,000) the last 3 years is the product on the floor and lack of promotion. Not because it was falling slightly before Pearl left.
Football's situation isn't apples to apples. So? I can say the same about football season ticket holders. I know many that didn't get new tickets last year and some that couldn't give some away this year, and they didn't rush back to get tickets for next season.
Also in case you didn't notice, attendance across the SEC was pretty terrible this year, and there's been widespread reports of how sports attendance in general has been dropping. The NFL almost had to blackout 3 playoff games.
