Our DT's were weak sauce for some time.

As much as I like Daniel Hood's aggressive attitude, just like the Sullins twins would not play on our currently much improved OL, he would not be a starting NT on a team that had players like Haynesworth and Henderson.

DT Sheldon Day Indianapolis, Indiana
Warren Central
6'2" 268

DT Jonathan Taylor Millen, Georgia
Jenkins County
6'4" 315

DT Jonathan Bullard Shelby, North Carolina
Crest
6'4" 255

DT Danny O'Brien Flint, Michigan
Powers Catholic
6'3" 278

DT Korren Kirven Lynchburg, Virginia
Brookville
6'5" 278

If we get 2 or 3 of these guys (we are in it for many more but this is somewhat of a dream group and the last two we have a very strong shot with) we will be on the way back to having the type of dominant strength at DT that only 4 teams on our schedule each year can match.

Malik Jackson and Maurice Couch should be strong this season and Hood I hope will be a capable backup. The DL should definitely be better this year than last (despite J Smith breaking a bone in his foot).

Our OL is young and very very strong.
Our secondary has some incredible depth at this point (and the best writer about sports in Byron Moore that we have ever had as a player).

Piece by piece, the staff is recruiting in the players we need to get back to a championship level we all desire.

We haven't had many DTs that would start over Henderson and Haynesworyh

Shaun Ellis (Big Katt), Darwin Walker, Parys Haralson... There used to be a much stronger DL than we have had in recent time.

Both of the studs I mentioned came in the same year. That is the kind of recruiting I want us to get back to, and I think it is possible.

By the way, with Bullards transfer I think we have to have one of the strongest and deepest OL's in the SEC this year.

Totally agree with the OP, if we solidify our DL play we will be tough year in and year out....I think it is obvious DD knows how to build depth, as he has quickly done on our OL and DB's

Haynesworth, Henderson, Walker, Haralson. Who recruited these kids? Just kidding the Fulmerophiles!!! I am glad he is gone, but just a tweak to some is really fun.

Nor has anyone else. That was a once every 20+ years type of thing.

Exactly. And what makes anyone think that those five guys listed would start over Henderson/Haynesworth? I'm not convinced in the least.

Dan Williams wouldn't start over them two, and he was still a first rounder.

Very true. That just makes it even more sad that we laid down in the SEC Championship Game that year and missed out on playing for the National Championship. Even with a "one every 20+ years" load of talent, Fulmer still tripped up at the finish line ... we pounded the crap out of Michigan, but that was a poor substitute for what should have been.

I think that Mark Richt is going to have a very tough year.

I think we will get some absolute studs on the DL.

And yes it should have said "Lance Thompson is ready to bring us back" although it probably should have said, "Beefing up the DL" or something like that, because I think Wilcox, Sirmon and Thompson are all a big part of the recruiting. I even think Sirmon's replacement is a guy who played DL at Auburn who is going to help make our DL better.

reggie white is the only player we've ever had on dl that could supplant one of those two... imo it would definitely be haynesworth benched by him... white played some end too tho.. esp in third and long... man ... if we had henderson and white starting... my god... who would need linebackers

That one still stings ten years later. Along with the 2008 UCLA game in the Rose Bowl, one of the worst coaching performances in college football history.

I'm soooooooooo confused. I expected LB'r talk.

That said; if people believe that we will ever have a Haynesworth/ Henderson combo again at tackle; keep dreaming. These guys went on to be NFL franchise caliber players. Even in the NFL they are a once in a decade DT's.

DT and QB are the hardest positions IMO to land top caliber talent; that is why they make so much when they move on to the NFL. Its easier in college to scheme with a average talented QB than the NFL but you can't hide a sub-talented DT at any level. I have watched Pee-Wee teams line up with the little chubby kid at QB and run straight up the middle on an undersized D-line.

Long story short: There are not enough quality DT's around to have a miracle happen in one year. We need a miracle to happen but I don't expect it to be any time soon. I hope CPS can help when he is not busy with the LB's.

Yes! Please MHF tell me one DL that has been in Knoxville (UT player or opponant's player) that would start in front of Al and John? Maybe Reggie White, but I'm not sure how much better he was than them? I think we are going to be fine with the group we have and the recruits this staff will bring in! Find something else to worry about! Go Vols!
