Pete Thamel on Currie/Jones

On timing, when you've found the cancer you cut it out.... don't let it linger and spread.

CBJ is done, he's checked out.

He needs to go ASAP or the damage will continue unabated.

I had as much access as anybody on this board. Watching it in the dayroom at Kirtland AFB in NM. :) Had the same impression and the same amount of KNOWLEDGE. I think Majors tried to strongarm for more money, ticker went bad, while he was recovering Fulmer coached the team at a higher level with resounding success, Majors rushed back in a panic and the team suffered as he tried to reestablish his authority. All that could be true AND his allegations also. The road to success isn’t always sweet and rosy and the knives sometimes need to be wiped clean. :wink2:

That’s pretty close. You left out that Majors stiff armed Dickey because he thought his popularity and legend was stronger than Dickey. Dickey had enough. Now I love Johnny, he is indeed a UT legend and he was our head-coach. His logic failed him in dealing with Dickey. Someone has to be in charge of things and Dickey decided that would be him. Johnny will blame someone else for his idiotic actions as he can’t accept responsibility for what he did.

You heard Majors' version.
You've seen the official version.
The truth is closer to the official version. Majors challenged Dickey. He said he wanted a raise and wanted it now. Dickey told him that there was a salary freeze for academic employees and it would not be fair to them if Majors got a raise. Majors pointed to basketball where Houston got a raise the year before. He said if he didn't get a raise he would quit. Dickey stood up. shook his hand, told him he hated to see him leave, and announced the resignation! FACT

And I’m not declaring that false. Just noting that it’s a personal account. People lie. What exactly made it “official”?

Sounds good. Where can I read the court transcript? :)

Not that it discredits his opinion but for those who remember the Manti Te'o scandal, it was Pete Thamel who wrote the story about his (non-existent) dead girlfriend in SI. He has had a hard time living that down.

Honestly, unless the team quits on Butch, I'm certain he finishes the season. As a matter of fact, if the responses from the candidates Currie has on his list are not receptive, I can see Butch being offered the chance to remain another year with an opportunity to make changes on his staff with no extension and no raise. Butch and sexton won't like that and make seek greener pastures thus saving UT a lot of money. Then again the opportunities for Butch may not be that plentiful and he might just accept that offer and those conditions. Fans and some on the team would be less than thrilled with that. Should be interesting to see how Currie manages this.

Speaking of Curries list, I suspect it may be just a tad different than the UT fans lists on this site.

Recruiting would be a disaster. They can't be half way about this. It didn't work out. It's time for a change. And greener pastures? Who in their right mind is going to pay Jones $4.1 million? We're biting the bullet on another fat contract.

Actually if you can find archives of the two Knoxville newspapers from that timeframe you’ll be able to read some pretty in your face comments from Majors. You really wouldn’t need transcripts.

The longer Curry waits, the harder he will make it for the incoming coach to build a solid recruiting class. Even if he can't officially hire him until the season ends, if an acting coach, our committs will have a good idea of who will be coaching them. I believe information is always given where needed.

What if the incoming coach is currently coaching another team? Can't really react now if that's our target and can't contact him until the season is done.

Currie's first target is fire Butch now. Yes you can contact another coach because they all have agents you talk to first to show your interest. Fire Butch now is our only concern.

I think Currie probably needed to see what happened vs. SCar. Now knowing that and what lies ahead, he doesn't see a path for a winning season (probable losses to Bama, KY, LSU). Prior to the USCe game, I believe he already had his short list of coaches ready. I think this loss prompted him, if he hasn't already, to start reaching out to agents and coaches to guage interest. I still think he waits to see what goes down at KY and then makes it known CBJ will be let go at the end of the season. I think by that time he will probably have a good idea who his top three candidates are and what their interest may be. Most of the candidates will need to get to the end of the season before UT can make an announcement. No use getting wrapped around the axle over CBJ not being fired yet. It's coming. If we lose a few recruits, it's just the nature of making a change like this. But, if it's a home run hire, the recruiting class will be back in shape quickly.

I cringe a little bit every time someone implies wanting to dump Butch is some emotional overreaction to a loss. This guy is a laughingstock, and as long as he’s here, so are we.

Very good story in ESPN online about the troubles at Nebraska, quite similar to UT. Interesting read...

Yeah, I have never been a fan of Pete Thamel. He is a good writer, but I disapprove of his superiority seeking at whatever cost to others. So I kept waiting while reading this article, for the knife to come out--on UT or Jones or the fans--somebody. The last thing I expected from this article was a semi-unctuous advice column from Grand Father Time.

As several other articles have pointed out, it's not about firing Butch Jones anymore. It's about who would replace him. Other coaches who are successful right now that would be realistic candidates are coaching other teams. They would be stupid to walk away mid-season from the teams they are coaching to come to Tennessee. No one will be accepting the head coaching position until after the regular season is over and potentially waiting until after bowl games.
That being said, I would like to see Butch gone after the Alabama game. Put Brady Hoke in as an interim coach and let him finish out the season.

No they won’t. People are still dumb enough to show up. No reason that the crowd should have been that big yesterday, but people showed up.

**** off. Standing by your school win or lose shouldn't be viewed as a bad thing, not by a long shot.

He is talking about financial support. If they choose to go with another Butch Jones level hire then financially supporting the program is just enabling their greed and lack of commitment to getting it done here.

All accounts support that TN won't even approach Kelly. So we are supposed to continue financially supporting a program that hires a mid-major coach with a shade over .500 winning record while not even talking to someone with his resume.

There people involved in our program that are holding TN back

So we should wait and see just how many recruits we can lose by season's end? Might not have a 2018 class by that time with the way this season is going

who cares. This is about the long-term health of the program. They panicked and hired Dooley to save Kiffin's top 10 class, which they did, and how did that workout for us?

Soon as Butch’s fate became clear (UMass...UGA), that class has been in flux. Secondary concern presently.

It would be one thing if he just said he was going to make the personal decision to do that (as if boycotts in sports do anything other than backfire, but that's a discussion for another day). But to just flat out insult the fans who stand by their school through thick and thin, good times and bad times? Yeah, he can **** right off.
