I watched Crimson Tide the other day. I would love to watch it with a real submariner to hear the commentary. FWIW, When I was in my last C130 squadron, we were the guys that sent (one form of) that EAM that caused the whole kerfuffle in that movie. Gave me flashbacks. ;)

FYI, Crimson Tide is 90% BS. I did 3 boomer tours, so...

Red October too. Some things in there are close, but for the most part, pure drama.

Out of every "sub movie" out there, I would say Das Boot was the best, and most accurate. No, I didn't serve in the Kriegsmarine, but we know a lot about how things were for them, and that movie was solid. Gave me chillbumps.

And I met Tom Clancy back in the late 80's. He rode us for a day to "see how we did things". Total ass.

Shot in the dark but you ever served or met a guy raised in TN who is a huge bama fan (yeah he had issues) who lives in GA now and runs a nuke plant? He is a commander now in the reserves. He still checks subs weaponry.

He is 49 and went through Kings Point back in 01.

Up Scope. No close contacts, so...

Nope. I still have a few friends I served with, or for, over the years that I am still in touch with. Some of them still have contacts "inside the wall", and that's how sometimes I know things. Nothing classified, just which way the wind is blowing. Like, say...in the Eastern Med a week ago.

Closest nearby contact is retired Vice Admiral Al Konetzni. He's close by. Don't know his full history, but he commanded the USS Grayling, USS Kamehameha, and was the Commodore at CSS-16 when I was on a boat there. I do know that any sailor who served under him, this one included, loved him. His voice was straight-up close to Rodney Dangerfield, and he loved his sailors. I drank a lot of beer he paid for in the Chief's Club.

Soviets hated him. He ate Victor III's for lunch back in the day.

The war call of the Kamehameha was "IMUA", Hawaiian thing, but they said it stood for "I Miss Uncle Al" after he transferred.

He was old school. Should have been the CNO. Think he retired as SUBPAC.

Love that guy. If I had to go to sea tomorrow...and knew I was going to war...I'd want him as my CO.

Up Scope...

Wife won't let me buy a fire truck. Back story...

On a road we drive on fairly often, there's an open area where there always seem to be 3 or 4 old / not that old fire trucks parked. I guess the property owner buys old fire trucks and then re-sells them. Don't know, but anyhow...

She asks me what I want for my birthday. So I say "a fire truck." The resulting conversation is interesting, if not entertaining, but it kinda goes like this:

Her: "What in God's name would you do with a fire truck?"

Me: "Baby, just go with me here. Think about it. We go to dinner at a restaurant. It's crowded. Forget about looking for a parking spot. We just pull up; hit the lights; and go inside. Heck, the folks waiting in front of us will probably leave."

Her: "You're an idiot."

Me: "But there's more. You like the local parades on holidays. We always end up parking half a mile away and walking. Now? We just line up right behind all the other fire trucks, and we get a front-row seat."

Her: "Are you already drinking?"

Me: "And there's a financial side to this too. When we renew our homeowner's policy, and they talk about the nearest fire station and the ISO rating, we just tell them we own our own fire truck. That's gotta lower the rate."

Her: "My Mom was right about you."

Wimmen. I swear. Can't reason with them.

Well, talk about a small world. Yours truly retired off of the USS Tennessee (Gold) back in January of 2000.

I still have a couple of the old ship's patches (Submarine coming out of the toilet...you'd have to see it to get it). And I have 3 or 4 USS Tennessee Test Depth Beer Mugs.

I also have a special-made USS Tennessee (BB-43 / SSBN-734) Old Timer knife that Jeaneatte Rudy (remember Rudy's Farm? That's her. RIP. Great lady) had made for both crews way back when. Every member of both crews got one. There were only 300 of them made, and I have one.

Might have a few other trinkets lying around, but it's been awhile, so I'd have to do some digging.

Tell him to stay motivated; stay focused; move fast; and get them Dolphins. Life gets a lot easier once you're qualified. And here's an "oolie" for him (he should know what that means): What is a bucket surfer? Hint: It has to do with the SAN tanks; one of them in particular. Being on the 734, he won't have to worry about it. Different system now.

I had a German Sheperd. Sasha. AKC, and German lineage. Paid a healthy sum for her. It was cheaper than kids in the long run.

And much easier to train.

Far as I know, she never went to school in Camden. But I was gone about 50% of the time, so...

I want to clarify something you said here: it seems to say there were 300 men who served on both BB-43  and SSBN-734? Did I misunderstand that?

No, what I said… Or meant to say… Was that Jeanette Rudy ordered 300 of the knives to cover both crews. The blade of the knife is engraved with the hull numbers of both the battleship Tennessee and the submarine Tennessee.

Edit: the ballistic missile submarines have two crews, blue and gold. So the total is just under 300.

Been a while since I looked at it so as you can see, I was off on a couple of details. Submarine hull number is on the handle. The reference to battleship Tennessee is on one blade, and the other one references to Tennessee Volunteers.

Also, it’s a Schrade.
