Penn State scandal (merged)

Pres. Spanier canceled the presser. Sounds like JoePa wanted to do it but Spanier wouldn't let him. To everyone in PR classes: this is a good example of how to make a terrible situation that much worse.

Penn State football coach Joe Paterno says he's disappointed university President Graham Spanier has canceled the team's weekly press conference, without explanation, this morning. The press conference was supposed to begin in an hour, at 12:30 p.m., and Spanier canceled it without conferring with the coach, Paterno said.

public bickering at this point can't be a good thing, especially when both guys are likely to be fired when this is over.

I'd imagine that school counsel made the call on canning the press conference.

Spanier is afraid to face the facts. Hope he gets ripped to shreds even worse than he already has been in the media.

don't know if he's afraid, but I do know that he's implicated to some degree and that counsel almost had to tell them that this had to be cancelled.

Press conference is a lose/lose.

There is no way Paterno or Penn St would have come out of it looking any better.

Fact is, there is no way that Paterno, the President, or anyone else with knowledge can survive this. Someone on the Board has to step up, demand the firing of all of them, and start over.

This is going to cripple that program for a decade because whoever they bring in is going to have to be squeaky clean, and run a program beyond reproach.

STATE COLLEGE -- Penn State administrators have canceled Joe Paterno's weekly news conference in which he was expected to field questions about a sex abuse scandal involving a former assistant coach.

Paterno's son Scott tells The Associated Press on Tuesday that the decision was made by President Graham Spanier's office.

Scott Paterno says his father was disappointed and was prepared to take questions about the scandal as well as the upcoming game against Nebraska.

IMO, the first steps in distancing Joe Pa from any potential "cover up" within the athletic department, to portray him in a positive light. "Hey. I want to answer those questions, but they won't allow me to do so."

Resignation/retirement (with fanfare applied by the AD, as I don't think the general public will be interested) is only a matter of time.

"May no act of ours bring shame."

Please.

Think UT had a hard time finding a coach? Who in the hell would step in that? Think Schiano would still take this job?

No, not true. As a PA attorney myself, the PA Attorney General has charged exactly what the law permits them to charge. Conspiracy and all that crap is not applicable law in this matter, the case would never make it to Court, because the charges would be dropped, because they do not apply to this case. Conspiracy you need an explicit agreement between all parties, that is not existent here.

Joe Paterno wand Graham Spanier must go. I am confident they will. I would be surpruised if Spanier makes it past the Friday Board of Trustees meeting which Governor Corbett is attending.

Pressure has ramped up even more so today. One of the most respect newspaper in the sate, Harrisburg Patriot, called on Paterno and Spanier to resign today, editorial right on the front page. Here is the link

OUR VIEW: Penn State's Graham Spanier, Joe Paterno need to leave as result of Jerry Sandusky case. Doing what the law required wasn't enough | PennLive.com

That is an affirmative misstatement of law. Under PA law, you absolutely don't have to have an explicit agreement. The agreement can be inferred from the fact situation that they knew what the goals of the conspiracy was and knew or should have known what was going on. There is ample evidence to argue that they should have known that Sandusky's goal was to utilize the facilities to rape kids and Penn State continuing to allow him to use those facilities is enough to indict them for conspiracy.

This story is even crazier that in 1998 he admitted to one of the first victims that he did something inappropriate. Two detectives brought it to the local da who decided not to pursue charges.

Can you imagine how hard it's going to be to recruit kids to PSU for the next few years? If I was a parent, I wouldn't want anyone from that program in my house or near my kid until I was convinced that any trace of the current administration was completely gone.

I agree unless there is some type of case law in PA that makes conspiracy there different than conspiracy in the majority of the rest of the country.

Matt Millen just lost it on SportsCenter. I despise the man for what he did to the Lions organization, but you can tell how hard this hits a man like Millen, who played for Penn State and was a big supporter of the Second Mile. This is tough to watch.

decided not to press charges after they made Sandusky promise not to shower with little boys anymore.

"The conduct of the parties and the circumstances surrounding such conduct may create a “web of evidence” linking the accused to the alleged conspiracy beyond a reasonable doubt."

"An agreement can be inferred from a variety of circumstances including, but not limited to, the relation between the parties, knowledge of and participation in the crime, and the circumstances and conduct of the parties surrounding the criminal episode; these factors may coalesce to establish a conspiratorial agreement beyond a reasonable doubt where one factor alone might fail."

This is from a Pennsylvania case.
